Book Publishing Companies In Utah - Roy Trewin Porte was born on May 8, 1876 in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada. When he was only five years old, he moved to the United States with his widowed mother, settling in Casselton, North Dakota. Little did Porte's mother know that her hand press at home would be the catalyst for a successful and international career in the printing business. What started as a small print job from home quickly turned into a legitimate newspaper job at the young age of fourteen. By the time he was eighteen, Roy Porte had become a well-known "boy editor" in Hunter, North Dakota, where he founded The Herald and ran it from 1894-1897. Porte later traveled to Fargo and opened a commercial printer there - being one of the first to do so.
His mastery of printing and his knowledge of cost finding led to his appointment as secretary and cost expert for the Commercial Printers Organization in Cincinnati, Ohio. In this capacity he traveled extensively as a lecturer on the subject of printing costs. In July 1916, Porte found himself in Salt Lake City, Utah, to take the position of secretary of the Ben Franklin Club. A year later, he published the first edition of the Price List, which later became known as the Franklin Printing Catalog. The Price List was an immediate success, and in 1924 the Porte Publishing Company was founded to continue publishing the catalog.

A Practical Cost System, first printed while he was head of the Porte Printing Company in Fargo, North Dakota, is one of many works published on the subject of running a successful printing business. A second, revised edition was printed in 1920, and from there several other titles, some even classified as "fiction". Many of these stories come from personal experiences; some gathered through the confessions of others, but all tried to entertain and encourage them to be involved in printing. The stories found in The Printers of Chiapolis (1922) and John Smith (1924) were originally serialized in The Inland Printer-a trade magazine for the booming printing industry and the first American magazine that changed its cover with each issue.
Porte became internationally known as an expert on printing costs. His published works were translated into foreign languages and used abroad, while Porte himself traveled extensively - speaking before print organizations and helping humanitarian efforts. In addition to his passion in the printing business, he is also interested in various cultures and the history of printing. Printing Through the World (1928) follows Porte on his travels to different countries where he associates with leading printers and studies the printing practices of those countries. In the introduction to the later hardcover edition, published in 1929, Porte acknowledged that his writings may contain errors, noting that "nothing contained in the following pages should be considered as a survey or a complete description of the state of printing in the country I visited. - far from it. written only from observations, personal contacts and general impressions after visiting each port and with a fresh mind.'
He continued, "About two years of travel, the closest thing to my mind is the hundreds of personalities I met who have become my friends. I visited most of them, but for a short time and often in language difficulties [...] The friends I met spoke anything from Sanskrit to English. However, we all speak the same language - the press. As a result of this trip, Porte maintains communication with leading printers around the world. Some of these correspondences can be found in the records of the Porte Publishing Company, located in the Manuscript Department of J. Willard Marriott Special Collections Division, while his travel photos are housed in the Porte publishing photo collection.
Porte's travels took him to countries in Europe, Latin America, the South Pacific, the Far East and the Middle East. It was perhaps this trip that inspired him to publish his own edition of Edward FitzGerald's translation of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. In the publisher's note, Porte described himself as a student of Gutenberg and believed that "once a year the printer should print what he wants, without thinking of profit." His Rubaiyat was produced in this way, 486 copies were printed on Christmas Day 1932. Colorful treasures were printed for his friends "may they be lucky to have this book as I was in printing it".

Roy Porte died on July 21, 1936 after a long illness. He is the president of the company, an honorary member of the Utah Press Association, the author of dozens of books, pamphlets, monographs, articles and lectures, in addition to being an avid collector of rare books and press samples from all over the world. . After his death, the staff of Porte Publishing was included in his will and received a third of the estate, dividing the dividends from the share capital and part of the sales. Located in Salt Lake City at 952 East and 2100 South since 1924, the company continued for twenty years before closing its doors. The commemorative issue of The Business Printer - the last issue, printed in September 1936 - featured written tributes from friends, family, colleagues and contemporaries.
Finis is not included in the records of those whose private lives are of public interest at the time of their death. If the work is good, diligent, meticulous and enthusiastic, the influence will continue, until no one can name the day, the record of achievement can be called a closed book.
