Tips For Choosing The Right Commercial Asphalt Contractor
At World of Asphalt 2019, Brian Hall presented a seminar on residential and commercial paving best practices. Hall, a territory manager at Leeboy, Lincolnton, North Carolina, visits dozens of paving jobs every week.
Here we share some of the insights Hall presented in the first of a three-part series devoted to best paving practices for residential and commercial jobs. This article outlines the job description for each member of the crew, and future articles will describe job site planning and best paving practices.
Asphalt plant jobs include loading trucks properly, covering loads, safely moving to job site assembly area, queuing for pavers, centering for pavers, watching out for the dump truck. , stopped just in front of the paver, quickly got out and headed for the clean-up area, Hall outlined.
Loading the truck properly means following the correct order of three dumps required to minimize separation: the first drop should be in front of the bucket, the second should be behind the bucket, and the third should be in the middle of the cargo bed. bed

After that, the driver must cover his load, which is mandatory in most states. This prevents material from flying off on the way to work, but the main purpose of the load is to keep the mixture as hot as possible.
"When that material comes out of the silo, you're looking at 290 degrees of material coming out of the silo into that truck," Hall said. “But without a cover, the top is cold while the inside is warm. If you drop it, it will come out in pieces. parts are what you want to avoid.
The driver then safely goes to the job site to transfer his load to the paver. He will follow the instructions of the dumper to prevent the paver from falling. The operator must avoid any distractions on the paver or risk taking his foot off the brake, driving away from the paver and placing expensive asphalt in front of the paver to be cleaned later.
From the moment the driver has fully lowered his bed, he pays attention to overhead obstacles, such as trees or power lines.
Reasons Why Quality Asphalt & Paving Is A Must For Bay Area Commercial Properties |
"If you start cutting branches off a 100-year-old oak tree for a residential job, the homeowner is bound to be upset and all those branches and leaves will end up in your mix and degrade the quality of your mat," Hall said.
The driver must drive away from the paver after being instructed to do so by the dumper. Put as much asphalt in the funnel as possible, otherwise motorists will waste money. After the dumper flags the truck to leave, the driver lowers his bed and heads to the cleaning area.
"I've seen it time and time again where the driver gets out and raises his bed to throw the paver right to left," Hall said. "That bitumen has cooled down now and that's going to make the compaction process uneven across that spot."
When the driver clears his bed for the paver, the crew member must lift the asphalt with a skid steer loader before driving the paver.
Why Tracking Temperatures Is Key To Successful Asphalt Paving
It is the dumper's job to safely move the truck to the dump position, collect bills of lading when necessary, be aware of safety around the paver, such as overhead obstacles and other crew members nearby, and hopper for at least 25 percent full. They are the point of contact for both truck drivers and asphalt workers.
He or she must be careful to guide the truck to the paver without hitting the paver. If the truck lightly pushes the paver, the screed will dig into the mat and cause imperfections in the mat.
"The truck has to reverse while the paver moves forward," Hall said. "Truck asphalt paver suddenly stops." This allows the paver to meet the truck instead of the truck hitting the paver.
Very simple: the asphalt paver operator drives the asphalt paver safely and lays the asphalt. However, Hall said he could be responsible for much more on a commercial paving job.

"He's responsible for the layout of the track because he needs to know how the crew gets from one spot to another," Hall said. "Note I didn't say he was responsible for laying the rope lines. You don't want that guy 300 yards away when the tarmac is visible. But he oversees the layout."

The paver operator controls the speed of the pavement to suit working conditions and limits stopping and going. He or she understands the paver control panel; They will ensure that the content remains consistent. They are also the point of communication between the pourer and the beam operator.
"You'll find that everyone on the crew talks to the person in front of them and the person behind them, so everyone knows what's going on," Hall said.
