It is important to know which routing number to use to ensure that the funds you send or receive go to the correct account.
Banks use routing numbers to identify each other during money transfers, or what the American Bankers Association calls "negotiable instruments." These numbers consist of nine digits and contain unique information. The first four digits are the Federal Reserve System routing symbol, the next four digits are the ABA institution identifier, and the last digit is known as the check digit.
As First Citizens Bank shows, banks can have multiple zip codes. Whether a bank uses different area codes for different states generally depends on both its size and whether it has a history of mergers and acquisitions. It also depends on the transaction for which the number is used. For example, First Citizens uses a different routing number for wire transfers than it does for direct deposits.
You can find the check routing number in the lower left corner next to the account number.

First Citizens Bank is probably the best choice if you want to open bank accounts for free. At Woodforest National Bank, most bank accounts have monthly service fees, and there is only one free savings account at Regions.
If you want to earn a high interest rate on your savings account, none of these banks offer a high yield savings account. However, Woodforest can be attractive if you want to open a CD because it offers better interest rates than many other traditional banks.
If you want to interact with customer service outside of traditional banking hours, you may prefer Regions Bank. Regions is the only bank of the three that has 24/7 customer service. You also have several bank account options, including specialist bank accounts for children, teenagers and seniors.
