As part of its adult education and literacy contract with the Gulf Coast Workforce Development Board, Houston Community College is required to provide vocational literacy, workforce literacy and other career pathways programs for adult learners.
Community Colleges In Houston
Workplace Literacy (WPL) programs are usually offered by an employer, only for specific employees. The curriculum for workplace literacy initiatives is customized and based on authentic print and other media used by employees in their everyday health, safety and work environments. Instructors use authentic materials to teach employees reading, writing, math, and language skills while strengthening material acquisition skills. English Language (ESL) options available.
Literacy is a wage-based job, with employers, employees and the college jointly supporting the planned necessary costs. Employers use the minimum wage to cover training costs along with other costs such as supervision, instruction and career planning.
The Work Literacy (WFL) program is offered on HCC campuses or other locations only to a specific employee or group of employees. The curriculum for workplace literacy projects is customized and based on other tools used by workers in their everyday health, safety and work environments. Instructors use authentic materials to teach reading, writing, math, and language skills to employees while reinforcing acquisition of support materials. .English as a Second Language (ESL) options available.
The Accelerate Texas (ATX) curriculum is structured with contextualized essential skills to prepare adult learners for specific types of work. Employers can support ATX programs with paid internships and jobs for program participants. ATX programs train students in a variety of career options, including computer support specialist, general office support specialist, medical business, service specialist, HVAC technician, welding technician, commercial truck driver and certified nurse. Other career training opportunities are sometimes offered. In most cases, students are not required to have a high school diploma or GED®. ATX programs can also be designed to help adult English as a Second (ESL) learners.

Students in the Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program may attend classes outside of class using an online distance learning (DL) program.
