Clark County's First Government Surplus Auction Of This Year Begins Saturday

Cars are often the big ticket items at these auctions, with about 300 cars in the area. Retired police cars, official cars, trucks, motorcycles, fire trucks and even prisoner transports are up for auction. During the tour, you can see inside and under the hood of these cars, and you can switch them off and start them, but you cannot test drive them.

13 Action News spoke to a man named Tony. For years, he says, he's been going to government salvage auctions to buy cars for research.

"These cars have low mileage and are well maintained so they make good money. You can flip anything here. Go back and put it out on the internet all over the world and let people see what you have and you can make a little profit out of it,” said Tony.

Various other items will also be auctioned. From computers to chairs to desks to file cabinets, there are tons of office supplies. We have healthcare and storage equipment, cleaning and refrigeration systems, furniture and fitness equipment. You can also buy an old flatbed wagon or golf cart.

To the untrained eye, it may seem wasteful. But an experienced auctioneer named Quintin says you can get good prices on many of these items if you know what to look for.

"Once, I found an atom that split, and I couldn't sell it. It was full of mercury, so I ended up donating it to the university. It's a modern thing that sells well," said Quintin.

All vehicles and items put up for auction belonged to government agencies such as the LVMPD, the Fire Department, the City of Las Vegas and Henderson, Clark County, and the State of Nevada. All proceeds from this auction will be returned to those companies to replenish their inventory.
