Spectacular growth and market consolidation among the top five solar players in the US could threaten Sunrun's dominance in 2022
Largest Solar Energy Companies In Us
US residential solar is booming, growing nearly 30% year-over-year to reach 4.2 GW of new installations by the end of 2021. However, this year was not without its challenges. Installers face unstable supply chains, rising system prices, and omicron-induced labor shortages. The impact of these regulations is unevenly distributed across companies and operational sectors.

Publicly traded Sunrun captured 13% of the overall market and dominated as the top residential installer for the fifth year in a row. However, Sunrun's market share is down nearly one percentage point from 2020 -- the second year in a row the company has experienced a decline in market share. While Sunrun's direct and indirect installs continued to grow, flat sales in the fourth quarter due to Omicron-related labor shortages hurt their market share in 2021.
While Sunrun still maintains a comfortable lead, the mounting pressure on the company's growth rate is a testament to the unbeatable pace of other top players.
The most notable change in the rankings is the Freedom Forever, which captured 3.9% of the total market and pushed Tesla out of the top three for the first time. Freedom Forever's installations are up 80% in 2021, and the company has entered 12 new state markets. Meanwhile, Tesla increasingly relies on subcontractors for solar installations as the company shifts its business model more toward a full-service technology supplier. Given these two factors, we expect Tesla to continue to decline in the installer ranks in the coming quarters.
At its current pace, Freedom Forever's growth puts pressure on Titan Solar Power until 2022. Although Titan managed to increase its installations and market share last year, its growth has been very modest compared to previous years. As large regional installers with extensive networks, Titan and Freedom Forever often compete for sales, and their operations overlap in 15 state markets. Also, both companies follow a similar business model of relying entirely on third-party sales companies. Outsourcing sales to third-party companies — a customer acquisition strategy used by Sunrun — remains a popular strategy for top installers seeking efficiencies while expanding their geographic footprint.

Further down the leaderboard, the race for the top five is still going strong. In the latest example of consolidation in the residential market, SunPower announced the October 2021 acquisition of Blue Raven. In 2020, SunPower and Blue Raven accounted for 1.4% and 1.0% of the overall market, respectively. Going into 2022, SunPower will account for 2.7% of the overall market, besting Momentum Solar (#6 with 2.2% market share) and Trinity Solar Power (#7 with 2.0% market share).
The acquisition of Blue Raven strengthens SunPower's direct installation business, expanding its direct installation geographic footprint from eight to 19 states. SunPower noted that direct installation is at the heart of expanding service options and revenue streams. We'll continue to closely monitor how Blue Raven fits into SunPower's business model and how it affects installs next year.
US commercial solar (including community solar) continues to consolidate in terms of development and asset ownership. For the first time since leaderboard data began in 2013, the top 75 national installers account for more than 60 percent of the market.
Top asset owners now command nearly 40% of the annual market share, up from 32% last year. While commercial solar power remains a difficult business to scale, many leading developers and asset owners have quickly grown their businesses through this avenue. These projects are known for delivering scale (mostly in the multi-MW range) and fast customer uptake for non-residential customers. After all, subscribing to community solar is easier than installing solar on your own roof.

However, community solar projects are prone to the same hurdles as many utility solar projects. Interconnection delays and costs hold back gigawatt development in major community solar states. Additionally, larger projects tend to source equipment overseas, exposing them to the same equipment limitations as many utility-scale solar projects. Overcoming these challenges is critical to the continued consolidation of the commercial solar sector.
The residential finance market is also consolidating. The top five players accounted for more than 70% of the residential financing market in 2021, up from 60% in 2020. Market consolidation has intensified competition among financial institutions, lowering interest rates and dealer fees.
Goodleap maintained its position as the top financial institution and lender, capturing 26% of the overall market. Sunrun leads the third-party owned (TPO) market with 15%. While TPO capacity grew in 2021, loan volumes continue to dominate new growth, now accounting for more than 60% of the market. We expect this trend to normalize for the next few years before the investment tax credit for consumer-owned systems expires in 2023.
Fossil Fuels Still Dominate U.s. Energy, But Renewables Growing Fast

For more than 100 years, the United States has relied primarily on fossil fuels for energy. Recently, this trend is changing with growing concerns about climate change.
Fortunately, solar energy is considered the most abundant energy source on Earth. Solar panels capture solar energy through the photovoltaic effect. Basically, the Sun is a giant nuclear reactor that releases massive amounts of energy to Earth.
Solar collectors collect energy that can be diverted for use. Despite being a clean, renewable and abundant source of energy, its popularity has been slow. Fortunately, the cost of solar panels is coming down, making it a more economical option for both commercial and residential use.
Top 10 Biggest Solar Farms In The Usa 2021
America has done a lot of research on solar energy and the oldest solar power plant in the world is in California. As the focus turns to renewable energy, more and more states are devoting resources to prioritizing solar energy. Hawaii has stated that it will use 100% renewable electricity by 2045.
Who are the US solar leaders? The following companies are booming in the solar and renewable energy space. They are definitely on the rise and growth can be expected in the future. This list is not compiled by importance.
Solar and other renewable energy projects are expected to grow exponentially in the coming decades. Focusing on green energy and renewable resources focuses on creating a healthier planet and limiting global warming as much as possible.
Solar technology has finally reached a point where it is a cost-effective energy solution. That means utility and residential solar has finally reached a point where it costs less to generate energy than conventional coal or natural gas.
Mexico's New Renewable Energy Plan Is Ambitious But Vague
Now that we have reached this point, the good far outweighs the bad, and companies in the solar industry will continue to grow and prosper. And, as we've seen recently, traditional energy companies will continue to take a hit, and many of them will struggle to survive.

Enel North America selects Oklahoma for 3 gigawatt (GW) solar panels and cell factories
The plant, announced by Enel in November last year, will be one of the largest solar cell production plants in the United States, and Enel said it plans to eventually double its capacity to 6 GW.
We identified Oklahoma as a lead candidate and are excited about the prospect of expanding our presence in the state.

Enel North America already has an office in Oklahoma City and has invested $3 billion in wind projects in the state.
Gov. Kevin Stitt (R-OK) said in a statement, "Oklahoma is one step closer to entering into one of the largest economic development deals in state history, with the state investing in companies for more than 10 years. years."
Enol North America is reportedly "looking at the Port of Tulsa in Enola as a potential site for the plant."
Expected to begin production in late 2024, the facility will focus on manufacturing bifacial heterojunction (HJT) cells that combine aspects of traditional crystalline and thin-film solar cells. The factory is expected to be built
