Schoolcraft's Ayres-Rice Insurance Agency was named one of the top 10 growing auto insurance agencies in the West Michigan region in 2015. In fact, the agency has received this honor five out of the last six years it has been offered to auto owners.
Tom Olwitt, owner of the agency, received a plaque commemorating his achievements at a luncheon in Lansing, where Auto-Owners is headquartered. "It is very important for us to be recognized like this because we are an independent agency and it means we have a good reputation with car owners. They care about their customers. Their response to claims is really good," he said.
"The proof is in the pudding," Olwitt said of service car owners submitting claims. "Our product with them has been rewarding for us because they recognize the business our agency brings them," Olwitt said.

This week's eye candy is the new Auto-Owners Insurance Company building located on the company's south campus. Off Crates Road and I496 in Delta Township, the 250,000-square-foot office building was completed this spring and is expected to house 900 employees for a growing insurance company in Lansing.
Each side of this building has something interesting to offer its visitors. A smooth grid of glass and steel covers most of the structure, although the amount and use of materials varies depending on the facade. Only one section on the front facade has various window shapes mixed with brick and concrete. The variety of use of modern materials transforms this office building into a remarkable piece of architecture.
People entering the building from the front are drawn to the one-story white rectangle that sits in front of the large structure. Its modest height makes the building accessible, while its corner wall near the main entrance draws people in. The overall structure is asymmetrical, which also extends into the entry area with an episodic arrangement of floor-to-ceiling windows. The white rectangle itself is offset from the rear structure, creating space for a patio on its western side.

The structure is impressive when you drive back on the highway, but it's even more fun to approach it from Cratus Road. Small hills of manicured lawns shade the structure until you reach the parking lot. There you can see a cool, sleek structure sitting humbly amidst young trees, green grass and fresh pavement.

Depression soon followed, and car owners also experienced the lowest point of that era - the February 1933 holidays. The company demonstrated its corporate tenacity and financial stability by paying all claims promptly, daily and in cash! The firm then wrote more than $2.5 million in insurance premiums. Autoowners entered the field of general accident insurance in the 1940s, having previously only engaged in automobile insurance. Over the next five years, the company felt the need to acquire three more buildings near its headquarters to accommodate further growth.
