All teachers know that sometimes being sick at home is worse than going to school. Hopefully these emergency backup plans will make your life a little easier when you can't go to school.

We recommend printing these materials and plans in advance. That way, when you need to make a call, you can avoid going to school at 1am! We've all done it, haven't we?
Place everything in a tub marked "sub tub" and you'll be ready to go with very little effort.
We have included the following Common Core Standards where possible. Don't worry, if your state doesn't teach Common Core, these activities should still meet your standards.

Six Simple Steps For Organized Emergency Sub Plans
We provide links to additional emergency subplans at the bottom of this post so you can set up subplans for more than one day using our free resources.
Subprojects First, you will find a Word document that gives instructions for the following activities. You will be able to fill in information about your class. Or, cut and paste to add to your sub-projects. You may want to make changes to suit your students, but we hope it takes a little planning!

Large number cards require the teacher to give students the numbers 0 to 9. The teacher will say a number and the students will make a number. Or, tell the teacher that you are making a five-digit number. There will be 6 in the hundreds place and 1 in the ten thousands place. The teacher continues until the number is made and then the number is read by a volunteer. We have added decimals and commas to the number set.

Fiction Graphic Organizer Information Text Graphic Organizers We have created three graphic organizers for each area to use with any book. You can choose a guest teacher model to complement a graphic organizer. For classrooms where students are familiar with the terms, you can choose to have students complete them as evidence of their independent reading.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.5.5.C Use relationships between specific words (eg, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms) to better understand each word.
Synonyms and Antonyms This activity consists of four cards for each set with three synonyms and one antonym. Students work together to identify three words that have the same meaning and do not match the group. Add a challenge to this activity by asking students to create additional synonyms and antonyms for each set.
Literacy Centers Aligned To The Science Of Reading
Become an Expert Writing Activity Students will choose a topic that they can become an expert on. Students can choose sports, animals, plants or any other topic of interest. Students then plan and write a piece to teach others about their topic. Tell students that their audience is a small class in the building, such as a first or second grade class.
Thank you! This is a great help for busy teachers. Good to know I have a few things in case of an emergency! It's in your best interest to prepare for some emergency lessons if you have to miss school unexpectedly.
But try this instead: Create a google form (or paper form) for students to fill out exactly what they noted in the last 5 minutes of class. You can even ask them to take pictures or link to their work. It's all about holding them accountable, not you.
What if they still don't do a lot of work? oh right The world is not ending. This is something you can talk to them about or bring up at parent conferences if needed.
Nature Of Science
If you are using a textbook, there are often chapter or unit review questions. Take some time at the beginning of the year to select the questions you want to include in your contingency plans.
(And only if!) If you have extra time, add an answer key and you'll never need brainpower again. If you are absent and you are in unit 3, you can assign all questions for units 1 and 2.
You can pop a few questions at the end when it makes sense, but there's no rush. Reviewing is not a waste of time!
The necessary background is given in very simple language, and students can then be asked to work with graphs, look for trends, think about variables, do some CER and think about next steps.

Teachers can request teacher guides for activities, so I suggest you pick a few Data Nugget activities that you plan to use sometime during the year and get a guide.
Then you can assign one activity if you're away, and if you're never sick, you can do it elsewhere!

Assign a video and ask students to create some form of notes (options include one-page, fold-out, Cornell notes, etc.).

It's up to you, but I'll pick a few potential topics that you may have covered but could benefit from revisiting. Have them pick one that needs a refresh!
Have students complete an accountability form at the end of the period to see how much progress everyone is making. Some of my favorite projects that can be easily adapted for many topics are linked here and here.
Color Me PhD is a project created by Dr. Julie Rohr of MIT. This is a collection of pages highlighting recent research by PhD student scientists, postdocs and professors.
You can print the sheets and be ready to go. You can have students read about the research and then color it as they watch the documentary, and if they do well, you can create a bulletin board with their work.
Emergency Lesson Plans For Elementary Teachers
Challenge students to come up with 6-word memos for things they've learned throughout the year, if it's meaningful that you've learned recently. For example, the 6-word mnemonic for the Archaea domain is "We are small and embrace extremes."
Again, this type of constructive review of the material is not a chore and actually helps them anchor the material and build study skills.

How To Be An Effective Substitute Teacher
Ask your substitute teacher to make a card for your students for the school principal, guidance counselor, superintendent, or someone else in the school community. All they need is a pencil, a sheet of paper and a coloring tool (crayons, colored pencils or markers).
Third on the substitute teacher's list of activities is having students respond to writing prompts. Write a simple writing prompt and ask your students to write the answers. Some examples include writing about places they've been, food they like to eat, and things they like to do outside. All students need is a pencil and lined paper. Invite a substitute teacher to lead 10-minute exercises. Some exercises include jumping, touching toes, stretching arms, lunges and balancing on one leg. If the sub gets bored or runs out of ideas, they can choose a child who can
