Many people choose these computers over a Chromebook or Windows device because they offer a lightweight interface that integrates seamlessly with iPhones and iPads. This year's advancements in Apple's proprietary M1 Silicon make these MacBooks the best laptops ever made. There are two options in Apple's lineup; Lightweight MacBook Air and powerful MacBook Pro. Both share a core of strong content creation capabilities, but differ in two key areas: power and scope. We went hands-on with both MacBooks, showing where each excels in key areas, from design to performance. Use the comments below to decide which one is right for you.

Traditionally, a computer consists of individual physical parts laid out on a board. These include the central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU) and random access memory (RAM). Apple combined all these big parts into a tiny chip into one unified System On Chip (SoC) computing system. This is a big deal because it enables huge leaps in power, efficiency, and cache memory. Generally, the performance of the laptop deteriorates when it is disconnected from the power supply. But with M1 technology, MacBooks can do more, faster, without being connected to a power source. This also applies when battery life drops below 10 percent.

The Best Macbooks To Buy In 2023

To demonstrate these real gains, I had to look at my work laptop, an older MacBook Pro from 2019. It often overwhelms my creative workflow, needs a USB-C port because it's limited to only two ports, and has battery drain of 24 percent per hour. Compared to the new MacBook Pro - which has tons of connectivity ports, is cool to the touch, quiet and only drains the battery at 4% per hour - the difference is night and day. No matter how many intensive processing tasks you throw at Apple's new proprietary silicon, performance consistently delivers peak performance without turning on the fan. While this is true even of the base M1 that's on the air, the M1 Pro significantly improves encoding times, transfer speeds, and memory bandwidth thanks to more cores and transistors.

I've pitted both MacBooks against each other in a series of head-to-head tests below to show you which one is right for you. I called the MacBook Air with the base M1 chip and the M1 Pro with the M1 Pro, which is a mid-range chip, and integrated them into my daily workflow. These tasks include downloading software, viewing 20 open Google Chrome tabs (with some live streaming), and having an hour of video calling each day. I recorded the rate of decline in battery life every ten minutes on average per hour over three working days. To demonstrate the power of the M1 and M1 Pro, I used the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test to collect transfer and encoding speeds.

I will give you a price recommendation. Despite being an iPhone and MacBook user myself, I have found Apple products to be very expensive in the past. While most people can do a lot with a budget Chromebook, and a powerful Windows laptop allows for a variety of settings and gaming, this year's MacBooks are some of the most impressive laptops I've used. They offer the best creative suite (Garageband, Final Cut and XCode) and iOS streaming capabilities, plus the power to back it up all day without turning on a fan. Any of these laptops will last you years if you can handle the costs.

It's 1 pound heavier than the MacBook Pro Air outright. Its 14-inch body is square like a retro and much thicker to make room for all that power under the hood. The aluminum on both models has the same silver finish, but what sets these two apart is their overall beauty. The MacBook Pro offers a more advanced version with more power, bigger speakers, a larger mouse pad and a matte black Magic Keyboard design. The difference is night and day from the hard butterfly keyboard of my personal MacBook, which is also uncomfortable and imprecise due to the compression mechanism. Kudos to Apple for listening to the complaints and fixing the keyboard issues on this issue.

Macbook Pro Vs Macbook Air

Overall, the lightweight Air trumps the MacBook Pro's classic styling. It is more comfortable to hold, easier to travel with and beautiful to look at. Ports fall by the wayside on the MacBook Air - it only has two USB-C connectors and an auxiliary audio port.

If you need to connect a lot of devices or storage, lean towards the Pro, which recreates physical ports for HDMI, USB-C, SD card and even MagSafe 3 charging. This is a big win for those who don't want to connect to a USB-C port. The MacBook Air loses out in this department, as it only has two USB-C ports that can be expanded via a hub, but ultimately leaves you wanting more. Then you screw up the accessories. Carrying a MacBook Pro with a built-in camera, ports and speaker system in a backpack gave me freedom during testing. This makes a big difference when I often carry a USB-C hub, Logitech StreamCam, and BeatsFit headphones to use with the Air. The Pro-exclusive 1080p camera is a big upgrade for the box, and it's clearly visible on the top model's stunning OLED Pro Motion screen.

As for that screen, the Pro's exclusive Liquid Retina XDR 120Hz wrapped ProMotion Mini LED display is unmatched. Thanks to a million-to-one contrast ratio and over 1,600 nits of brightness for richer color accuracy and HDR performance, there's no need for a reference monitor for photo or video editing. Its high refresh rate is smooth and the 16:10 screen offers the thinnest bezels and notch to create more screen with less space. This year's MacBook Pro offers one of the brightest displays on the market, with brighter colors even in a room with windows or outdoors. This power gives it a great chance even on less bright OLED panels. The MacBook Air's 13-inch screen isn't skewed thanks to the 60Hz Retina display, but the 400 nit brightness offers only a quarter of the flickering of the Pro, which you'll notice in bright lighting. If you want the best viewing experience, go with Pro. At the top of the MacBook Pro, you'll find an upgraded 1080p camera for better low-light performance and tone mapping. Additionally, this notch allows for a thinner bezel for more screen real estate, as opposed to the larger bezels found on the MacBook Air.

Both MacBooks can download the same apps, offer quick reminders, and even run shortcuts. But running 20 tabs of Google Chrome, installing apps and keeping the brightness at 50% showed that the MacBook Pro's battery was only draining 4% per hour. It also stays cool and quiet when handling media tasks like benchmarking and playing live streams. On the MacBook Air, I saw just as great performance, but with a slightly larger drop of 7 percent per hour. To calm my power anxiety, I often check the power drop every 10 minutes. You can imagine my surprise when I first signed up when neither computer dropped percentage despite having apps open and running LoFi live from a YouTube stream. The Air's 30-watt USB-C 30 battery charges about 1 percent per minute, while the 97-watt MagSafe charger lets the Pro go from completely dead to 50 percent in less than 30 minutes. The MagSafe 3 charger on the Pro also features an updated cable design with a charge indicator light that changes from orange to green when the battery is low.

Inch Macbook Air Vs 16 Inch Intel Macbook Pro

I used Disk Utility's BlackMagic Speed Test to measure transfer speeds on an Air core M1 chip versus an M1 Pro on a MacBook Pro. Pro was twice as fast. This is because of the M1 Pro's more powerful processor, which enables desktop-like performance on a mobile device with insane battery life. But for everyday tasks, you won't notice this gain. When listening to media, Pro Audio on the MacBook Pro fills the space properly. His speakers have more bass. Combined with a better camera, the Pro's performance is the best for production and content creators.

Weight: 2.8 kg | Screen: 13.3 inches. Retina (400 nits) | Processor: M1 8-core processor | GPU: 7 cores | Memory: 8GB integrated

If you're on the go a lot with your laptop, the MacBook Air is a more portable option, as its lightweight design is much lighter and easier to carry. Apple put a lot of effort into this
