The resort has three distinct areas: East, West and North. You'll have plenty of room to enjoy the mountains with a variety of shops, food and drinks.
Another big selling point for Mountain High is that you avoid a ton of traffic on the way to Bear Mountain! Skiing is one of my favorite winter sports. If you're more of a snowboarder, that's fine too. Growing up in the Midwest, our biggest climb was a 300-foot hill called Perfect North, which was a great place to learn, but not much else. The thing about me is that I don't have enough skis to have my own set, although I might as well at this point. It would have saved me some money by now.
But anyway, I'm looking for a place to go skiing in SoCal where I can take a day trip if I want, and it won't cost me an arm and a leg. All my friends told me I had to do either Big Bear Mountain or Mammoth, but if you're familiar with those places, they're both expensive and nowhere near LA. Big Bear and Mammoth are 2.5 hours and 5.5 hours respectively from home. So these two are definitely not on the "day trip" list. The Big Dipper is bordering on it, but it's going to be a long day.
Then we found Mt Baldy. Except everyone I know in SoCal said Baldy's is the worst. It's a small mountain (still over 8k feet) but I don't think they gave it a fair chance. In comparison, the mammoth is absolutely huge, hence the name. And Bear is at least twice the size of Baldy. But Bear and Mammoth are very popular and I think it's best to stay under the radar.
Climbing Temperatures End Southern California Ski Season
. When I was at Baldy recently, there were a total of 20 people skiing the mountain! It's a small mountain, but it's not small!
My biggest problem with the big ski resorts is that you spend 2-3 times more time waiting in line than you spend skiing. It can be even worse in mammoths and bears; The picture above is proof of this. Of course, these pictures were taken after a heavy snowfall, but waiting an hour or more between runs is not my thing. At this point, it might be faster to break the hides and go up the mountain alone.
