Cable provider Cox Communications provides "last mile" consumer Internet connectivity over coaxial cable. Originally used to transmit TV signals, old-school coaxial cables today offer higher bandwidth and higher download speeds. And although fiber connection surpasses coaxial cable in bandwidth and download speed metrics, the spread of cable around the country means that Cox is able to offer high-speed cable Internet to customers who would otherwise be stuck with slower, more expensive options.

The service is available to current Cox Home Internet customers, and gives customers the option to consolidate their phone, cable and Internet bills.
The service is only available in Las Vegas as well as Hampton Roads, Virginia, and Omaha, Nebraska, with plans to expand to other markets "on a year-round basis," according to the company's press release. The company serves 6.5 million customers in 18 states.
Susie Black-Manriquez, Cox's communications manager, said Cox considered several factors when deciding to launch its mobile service, including "community representation, sales team readiness and growth potential."
"We are closely monitoring the wireless industry and believe this is the time to enter based on customer needs," Black-Manriquez said in an email.

Customers will be able to choose between two data plans - "Pay As You Gig" and "Gig Unlimited."
Pay As You Gig allows customers to pay only for the data they use, and it costs $15 per gigabyte, per month. Gig Unlimited is $45 per month and provides users with unlimited data.
Both plans offer unlimited calls and texts, 4G LTE and 5G coverage as well as access to Cox's Wi-Fi hotspots, according to Cox.
Black-Manriquez said customers aren't locked into annual contracts because they have the option to change their data plan "whenever they want."
