What you need: Straight board, square or ruler, Glue gun and glue stick, drywall or sewing tape, scissors, carpet fabric.
If you don't have an extra matching rug, grab a piece of donor fabric from the closet somewhere out of sight.
1. Using a straight, square, or ruler, cut a square blade around the damaged area with a utility knife. With a new knife, make a nice clean cut on the back of the rug on all 4 sides, then cut away the damaged area.
2. Cut a piece of carpet to the appropriate size to replace the one you just removed. Cut all 4 sides and make sure it's nice and smooth with no gaps, check it a few times as you make your cuts. Once you have cut the mat to fit, set it aside until step 5.

3. Cut small strips of seam tape or drywall paper and place them under the existing carpet and over the carpet hole on all 4 sides. Do not stick directly to the carpet pad, use tape instead.
4. Using a hot glue gun, apply a thick layer of glue to the back of the rug on all 4 sides of the tape/paper, making sure it runs, leaving extra paper for the new piece.
5. Now take the piece of your donation carpet and fold it inside the square to match all 4 sides of the back. Don't push down too hard, or some of the glue might come out between the two carpet arms and get onto the carpet pads, you don't want that.
Just press lightly with a book or other light object for a few minutes until the glue sets.

For larger areas like tears or large burns, just follow the same steps, the more practice you get, the better you'll get.

Iron Burn Repair
I threw my hot iron on the carpet and now I have an iron picture on my carpet. The carpet seems stiff and I don't know if it can be fixed.
The only way to fix it is to get a piece of the same carpet. Cut and move. Use a carpet stitch and make sure the fabric runs in the same direction.
I'm afraid you can't remove the sign until you replace that piece of carpet. When the iron comes into contact with the carpet, it burns the carpet fiber, which is irreversible. 🙁
