Last Friday, the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) broke ground on the $23 million Strawberry Mansion Apartments, which will bring 55 energy-efficient apartments to a three-square block on West 33rd Street, north of Arlington Street, and north of 32nd Street. on the east and Berks Street on the south.
The breakthrough marks the beginning of the final phase of PHA's development of Strawberry Mansion. Before Strawberry Mansion Apartments, PHA built two other affordable housing units, including Oakdale Apartments, which opened in 2015 and drew more than 400 people to live in its 12 affordable units. In a similar case, an affordable housing project in Kensington recently had more than 600 applications for 51 rentals.
Applications are not yet open for Strawberry Mansion apartments. But they will rent them all to families earning 60 percent or less of the area median income. Another 10 percent of the units will be reserved for families earning 20 percent or less of the area median income.
At the opening ceremony, Board President Darrell L. Clark said, "A quality home near attractive amenities like Fairmount Park should be a dream within the reach of every Philadelphian."

The units will be a mix of apartments and townhouses, one bedroom and four bedroom. Some homes will also be designed to be ADA compliant and accessible to the hearing and/or visually impaired. They will also be energy efficient and have Energi Star appliances.
The revolution comes at an interesting time for Strawberry Mansion, a neighborhood that has suffered years of neglect and high rates of poverty. But in recent years there has been renewed investment in the neighborhood above Fairmount Park and Brewerytown. A recent report revealed that 37 building permits were issued for new construction at Strawberry Mansion in 2016—a significant increase considering that only one permit was issued in 2011.
When construction of the Strawberry Mansion Apartments is complete, there will be a total of 100 affordable housing units in the neighborhood. NAMPA, Idaho — Mercy Creek Housing Community in Nampa will offer affordable housing for seniors when it opens early next week.
The apartments are located on the site of the old Mercy Hospital on 8th Street South. The idea for the project began in 2012, when an investor wanted to convert the old hospital building into affordable housing. But in 2016 a fire destroyed that building, so the developer had to start from scratch.
"It was disappointing, but it's great for our older community to see that development happening out of those ashes," said Nampa Mayor Debbie Kling.
Housing Bonds: Amendment Could Ease Government Borrowing
After years of work, the housing complex for over 55s is almost finished. Residents are expected to start moving in at the end of the week, Friday, June 28.
"Oh, it's terrible, it's not going to meet the needs, but it's better than nothing," said Andy Rodriguez, executive director of the Nampa Housing Authority.
According to Rodriguez, the project will help reduce the backlog of applicants trying to get into her agency's senior housing.
"Our waiting list for senior housing goes to the best applicant, the 2012 applicant," Rodriguez said.

The complex has 50 units. At least 40 of them must be lived by someone who is 55 years old. The other 10 will have no age requirement according to developer Chance Hobbs. He said he secured this project for seniors over 55 because of rising housing costs in the region.
"As rents continue to skyrocket, Social Security and other forms of retirement have not kept up with the cost of living," he said.
The project is funded by low-income housing tax credits provided through the Idaho Housing and Finance Association, Rocky Mountain Community Reinvestment Corporation and Nampa Development Corporation. All together, the apartment complex is worth about $9 million.
"A housing unit like Mercy Creek is very important to our seniors to help offset the rising cost of housing when living on fixed incomes," Kling said.

"We have about 100,000 inhabitants and 142 units if we look at them," Rodriguez said. "We serve 1.4 percent of our population and there's a greater need in our city than that."
Mercy Creek Apartments is currently taking 35 applications for the 50 available units. The complex has a studio, one and two
