One of the many things I've had to figure out on my own over the last year and a half is which mobile carrier I want to switch. I have been with T-Mobile for about 20 years. I've had very few issues with T-Mobile other than they don't receive information about where my dad lives, which was one of the reasons I wanted to quit. But I knew I wanted to move to a carrier that gave me more freedom and more coverage, which left me choosing between Google Fi and Mint Mobile. My girlfriend Carlye raved about mint so I decided to try it first.

Mint started in Costa Mesa, California as Mint Sim before moving to Mint Mobile in 2016. The founders realized that a big cable is not stupid, so they wanted to create a good and unique company.
Mint Mobile sells its plans in 3, 6 and 12 month prepaid options. There are no overage charges, and you're not locked into a contract. Since they are online only, you will not be paid to maintain physical stores with sellers. They also don't charge you a cent to pay for things that should be free, like hot water.
I like Mint's "one size does not fit all" approach to offering multiple data plans, as well as their 3-12 month options. You can choose the plan that's right for you. I chose the 4GB plan for myself because I'm mostly on wireless and don't use much mobile data. If I were to travel a lot, I would choose the unlimited plan.

The midband band, the 2.5GHz signal, is the midband and gives you 2 to 4 times the speed of 4G. Millimeter wave is a fast signal, but it can be blocked by soft objects like leaves or paper, making it unreliable.
Mint Mobile and Google Fi are two of the best MVNOs in the business right now. The cheapest Google Fi plan starts at $20/month, while Mint starts at $15. One of the biggest reasons I chose Mint over Google is that it spends more time in the US and Mint offers better coverage than T-Mobile. If I'm going to travel abroad a lot, I might go for Google Fi.
What Features Does The Mint Mobile App Offer?
There are two weaknesses here. Google Fi is very expensive when it comes to data; Few of their phones support all networks, data can be slow on all plans, and the Simply Unlimited package is limited. Extra charges for international internet, you have to buy at least 3 months at a time and they limit their speed to 35GB/month.
Mint offers users free calls to Mexico and Canada, which is great. But unfortunately you have to pay for international data in person. On the other hand, Google Fi offers international travel to more than 200 countries.
On a personal level, I'm not happy with Google right now. They left their song "Don't Be Bad" in the dust years ago and it seems like it's been downhill for them ever since. Google keeps making terrible decisions with things like Google Home and YouTube that limit its functionality. For example, forcing Google Home to connect to YouTube and music and removing Google Music was a huge step backwards in my experience. My experience was influenced by trying Mint before Google Fi.

For the past decade or so, I've always bought unlocked phones because they hold up less. Also, I don't like the extra junk that companies like T-Mobile force on the phone. So I bought the latest unlocked iPhone 12 Pro Max from Apple.

Mint Mobile doesn't really have any hidden fees, especially compared to what I paid T-Mobile for all those extra fees. I don't know what the recovery fee is for. I think it's crazy that there are 5 different Florida fees/taxes and 3 federal fees.

I had the same iPhone 12 Pro Max texting issues when I first started. The Mint Mobile system did not have my phone set to iPhone, so it took me several days and several hours of my time with Mint Customer Service to figure out and resolve the issue. However, that was the only problem I had. I think it was an APN issue. Porting my number from T-Mobile to Mint was a hassle. Setting up the mobile SIM card was also easy.
