Fix Summer Lawn Damage
There are some things that are just unavoidable in life. Things like death and taxes, the need to pee at night, complaining about the latest Game of Thrones series. And yes, watching bare patches appear with envy on your otherwise healthy lawn. Hence our "Two Ways to Repair Bare Spots on Your Lawn" guide.
They can be the result of heavy blows in the summer months. Or scratches seeping into the grass, your dog needs to pee in the middle of the night, or any of a dozen other reasons. But as frustrating and unsightly as your bald spots can be, don't worry. We can help with two simple but effective ways to fix these bald spots.
Of course, part of the solution is to understand why these bare spots don't become a common problem on your lawn. For example, if your bald spots are caused by a disease or lawn infestation, you'll find that more bald spots will appear almost as soon as you fix the old ones. The same goes for foot traffic, which is the cause. That's why it's so important to address root problems as soon as possible... that's where Joe's Lawn Care comes in and can help repair those bare spots.
In the meantime, here are two easy ways to repair bald spots on your lawn: reseeding and patching with new grass.
Fixing Dead And Brown Patches In Your Lawn
Overseeding: In the UK, most types of grass grow most actively between late spring and early autumn. This is why now is the best time to fix bare seed spots. That said, if you do decide to do this in the spring, be sure to do it early enough for the seeds to set well before the hot summer temperatures hit.
Turf Remediation: For those who prefer to do a reclamation job with new turf, we have good news: your time frame is much longer, with most of the growing season being your goal. The trick is to keep the newly laid grass nice and moist until it gets a grip on the ground. This is usually about two weeks for shallow roots and six weeks for a good deep root system. Therefore, we recommend planting the grass patches no later than mid-October. This gives you six weeks before the big December frosts begin.
Before you start repotting, you need to take a rake and remove debris and dead grass from the bare patch. We also recommend looking closely at this area to see if you can spot any scratches, which can be done by gently tugging on the nearby grass. If it comes off easily, you may have found the cause of the problem.
Compacted soil will make it nearly impossible for new grass to grow, so grab a heavy-duty rake and start loosening the soil. If this is difficult to do, it's best to use a main aerator to break it up, go through the thatch, and help your new roots get all the air, nutrients, and water they need to grow.
Does Your Lawn Have Bare Patches?
To do this effectively, start by adding a few inches of compost to the bare patch and spreading it out evenly. Do this directly on the surrounding lawn. Once you've done that, sprinkle the new grass seed nice and evenly over the area, thick but not so thick that they're all piled on top of each other.
Once you're satisfied the seeds are evenly distributed, lightly water the area to ensure they stay moist throughout the day. If necessary, use a little shade to help them germinate and not dry out. You will then need to repeat this every day for the first week, maybe even twice a day, until you see the seeds start to sprout. Once this happens, you can reduce your watering efforts to every other day for about the next 4 weeks. At that time they should be strong and healthy enough to thrive on rainwater alone.
Take your time getting the mower out and keep your lawn nice and tidy. Instead, wait until the new grass patches have grown 3 to 4 inches and the color blends in with the rest of the grass. And then you can cut it. This can usually take six weeks, so if you decide you need it
