Bermuda grass is a common warm-season grass in our region. The advantage of Bermuda is that it likes the summer heat and as long as it gets some moisture it will be at its best in July and August.

The evaluation and decision to plant this fall or not should be made before the pre-fall application is made, between late August and September.
This is the most traditional method. Any place where your lawn doesn't get at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight (under trees, on the north side of buildings, and in tight spaces between houses and fences) is a great spot. Often homeowners struggle to trim trees in an attempt to get enough light to allow Bermudas to grow. But, in most cases, cutting down or removing the trees rarely solves the problem. The best solution is to plant fescue areas in autumn. The downside of the "fescue only in shady areas" method is a mix of greens and dormant colors during the fall, winter, and early spring.
A common myth is that cotton should not grow in full sun. Fescue does well in partial shade or partial sun, does well in full sun when properly protected, and has a hardy time in dense shade. A full lawn is the perfect solution for a regular size lawn with few plants that make both cool season and warm season lawn care difficult.
What Kind Of Grass Grows In The Shade?
Fescue is drought tolerant but needs water during the summer to stay green. This lawn is mostly in full sun, and during droughts and hot summers it will receive 1.5" of water.
A drought-stressed lawn should re-green when it receives adequate moisture. If the area has been dormant for 5-8 weeks, there may be some grass left and you should plan to reseed it this fall.
In this approach, fertilization, weed control, mowing, aeration, and planting are the focus of fescue development and Bermuda control. Fescue needs a lot of fertilizer in the spring and fall, and none in the summer, the exact opposite of Bermuda. Non-Bermuda fescue herbicides are used, resulting in Bermuda control. Fescue responds best to longer cuts, 3" to 3 ½", while Bermuda prefers shorter lengths, 2" to 2 ½". Airing occurs in the fall, not early summer. And keeping the fescue in the fall keeps the fescue full and stresses the Bermuda in the winter.
The Bad: You'll still see some Bermudagrass in your lawn during July and August, but in many cases, with deep irrigation systems, fescue will be the dominant grass.

Aggressive methods are used to destroy Bermuda fescue. Because Bermuda grass is the most common weed in our region, it is difficult to find completely weed free. If this is your goal, aggressive herbicide treatments will follow in August.
