Salem Beauty School Suddenly Shutters After 50 Years

The cosmetology program is for students who are interested in pursuing a career in beauty and cosmetology services. This fun and creative program offers students the opportunity to engage in the art and science of cosmetology or hairstyling while earning high school credit and hours toward state licensure. Salem, Ore. -- Thirty years ago, Don Erickson began booking his hair at the Academy of Hair Design in downtown Salem.
The school was a short walk from her job at the Department of Education and she enjoyed interacting with the young, energetic hairdressing students. Even as he took a job, he continued to visit the school, which opened in 1967.
He arrived on Monday to make another appointment with his regular barber, who worked at a bar who decided to go back to school to work a few nights and spend more time with his family.

But when Erickson returned the next day, business was anything but bustling. Students are sitting on the bench outside with tears in their eyes. A small sign on the school door announced its closure, people were packing their stations.
"It hurts," Erickson said. "It's really weird that they just stopped."
Another student, who was days away from graduation, said he was told of the closing this morning.
The school was closed just months before its 50th anniversary. According to Statesman Journal archives, the Academy of Hair Design opened in 1967 at 444 Ferry St. S.E.

An October 1967 (paywall) story in the Oregon Statesman reported that there were 38 students, licensed instructors and two cadet instructors.
It moved to its current location at 305 Court Street NE in the 1980s. Gene Snook, one of the original owners of the business, remains on the board as president and owner of the salon. Michael Snook, the manager, did not immediately respond for comment.
In a Facebook post, grounds manager Julie Snook thanked the school's patrons and students for 50 years of service.

Sudden Closure Of Historic Downtown Salem Hair School Stuns Customers, Worries Students
Classes range from about 20 weeks of esthetics to 60 weeks or 2,300 hours of training in hair design, beauty and nail technology.
One student said several of them paid more than $1,000 to get their hair styling supplies but never received them. They didn't know what to do to get a refund.
Currently, they are working to connect with local cosmetology schools to complete their training. Another student wrote: "Rest (in) Peace Academy of Hair Design...you will be missed. Go College of Hair Design and Careers!!!"
