Children from affluent families who break up have a greater increase in behavioral problems than children from poor families who experience the same. But wealthier children benefit more from stepmother and stepfather involvement than poorer children. So says a new study in the latest issue of the magazine
, who also noted that the age of children when their parents separate plays a key role, with the most sensitive stage being 3 to 5 years old.
The study was conducted by researchers from Georgetown University in Washington and the University of Chicago, using a national sample of nearly 4,000 children from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. The researchers divided the children into three groups according to income and studied the effect of changing family structure on each group.

"Our findings suggest that family changes affect the behavior of children in higher-income families more than the behavior of children in lower-income families — both for better and for worse," said Rebecca Ryan, an assistant professor of psychology at Georgetown University and lead author. studies.
Why do children of high-income parents behave more after divorce than children of low-income parents? Ryan isn't sure. "To be honest, our study most convincingly finds that they work more, but it says less about why that might be."
But she has some guesses. The first is that fathers, who are usually the breadwinners of the family, often move out of the house, so there is a big drop in household income. Or maybe the kids have to move to a new neighborhood/school/friend group and the instability is taking its toll. Or maybe less wealthy families don't take it so hard. "Parental separation is more common in lower-income families," says Ryan. "Parents and children may perceive family changes as more normative, predictable, and therefore less stressful."
However, Ryan says, it's not just about the money. "Changes in income alone do not seem to explain the increase in behavioral problems, which surprised us." Moreover, changes in behavior were only visible if the children were younger than 5 years old. "We found no effect of parental separation in children between the ages of 6 and 12," says Ryan.
Divorce Statistics And Facts
Another surprise was that more affluent children over the age of 6 who were involved with a stepmother had behavioral improvements. Ryan and her team first noticed this when she conducted a previous study in 2012, but were still surprised that the findings were confirmed. That study also found that parental separation affects children whose parents were married more than children who lived together.
Ryan cautions that the differences between children whose parents were separated and those who were together were not as strong as the differences between low-, middle-, and higher-income families. "These results suggest that many factors other than family structure influence children's behavior, particularly children in low-income families." For them, the quality of the home environment, regardless of family structure, was most important for social and emotional well-being."
He even gets into a bit of a debate about whether fixing a marriage will help solve poverty, or whether you have to fix poverty to save a marriage. She is on the side of the latter. Programs designed to save a marriage, she says, will not be as effective as programs that "improve the quality of the socio-emotional or educational environment in the home." A report by UCLA psychologists and RAND economists has identified an effective way to reduce the divorce rate among lower-income Americans: raising the minimum wage.
The study, which was published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, is the first to analyze the effects of raising the state minimum wage on marriage and divorce rates among low-income people.

"When policymakers think about ways to help disadvantaged families, there's a general tendency to try to teach them things like better communication or coping skills," said UCLA psychology professor Benjamin Carney, lead author of the study. "The assumption that the consequences of income inequality can be managed in this way has been proven wrong time and time again.
"Fortunately, there are other, more direct ways to improve the lives of vulnerable families, and one of them is to implement policies that improve their lives in concrete ways."
The study is particularly timely. In March, a project of Republican members of the Joint Economic Committee released a report expressing members' continued commitment to communication skills education programs as a way to strengthen marriage among low-income Americans. Over the past two decades, the federal government has allocated nearly $1 billion to such programs.
But Carney said those initiatives are expensive and have been shown to be ineffective in several large studies.
Divorce: Behavior Of Wealthy Kids Affected More Than Poor Kids
A UCLA-RAND study shows that when states raised their minimum wages by $1 an hour, divorce rates fell by 7% to 15% over the next two years among low-wage men and women—including but not limited to to those who earn the minimum wage.
The researchers also found that raising the minimum wage by $1 an hour reduced the marriage rate by 3% to 6%. When younger, low-income earners earn more, they often delay marriage, rather than forgo marriage altogether, says co-author Thomas Bradbury, a professor of psychology at UCLA.
"Raising the minimum wage appears to align the timing of marriage for low-income earners with that of wealthier people, who tend to marry at an older age," he said, adding that later marriages are less likely to end in divorce. .
Both changes -- lower divorce rates and later marriages -- are likely to strengthen low-income families, and the effects that come after raising the minimum wage are significantly larger than the effects of federal programs on communication and coping skills, the researchers said.

"When the lives of poorer families become easier — that is, when they can be less poor — family relationships become easier without anyone having to learn anything," Carney said.
