A.  We accept monetary donations which we use to purchase food and straw. We accept donated greens (herbs) and fruit from local grocers. We always accept bird feed donations, but we do not need to accept free eggs. Well… the Chicken Ranch has seen a lot of history. From its origins in La Grange, Texas, the ranch has survived colorful times. For example, during the Great Depression, a barter system was introduced to pay for ranch services using chickens. The name Chicken Ranch remains today.

Other notable cases included Texas-born President Lyndon B. Johnson's public visit and the infamous closing of the ranch in 1973, now immortalized in the show and movie "The Best Little Ranch in Texas."

From the Alamo to the Astrodome, Texas history is filled with colorful and legendary institutions. Perhaps the most interesting and unique is the world famous and historic chicken farm La Grange. With its roots in the frontier days before Texas became a state, this charming brothel grew, changed and evolved with its land and people over the next 130 years.

The Chicken Ranch—the oldest continuously operating brothel in the United States—served six generations of Americans in Texas during the transition from cowboys to astronauts. Those who sought the favor of working girls included ranchers, cowboys, ranchers, soldiers, politicians, businessmen, and just "common people." Today, the chicken ranch is comfortably settled in its new location in Pahrump, Nevada, just outside of Las Vegas.

Before becoming a state, the Republic of Texas was dominated by strong leaders like Sam Houston and a changing population as easterners moved west and immigrants from central Europe moved to the new land to escape famine and persecution.

Against this backdrop of frontiers and social change, the brothel, which would not become known as the Chicken Ranch until the 1930s, opened its doors and beds to welcome and serve local farmers, ranchers, and cowboys. During the Civil War, soldiers from generals to privates took short breaks from fighting to visit public houses and rest and relax. After the war, cowboys on the long cow trail discovered a pleasant turn of dust in a brothel. The brothel became an integral part of the life and times of Texas' early frontier heritage.

The still-unnamed bordello's modern history and evolution into a famous Texas institution began in 1905 with Mrs. Fay Stewart (aka Jessie Williams and known as Miss Jessie) as its new owner and mistress. his. in the classical sense. Over the next 40 years, this dynamic woman—described as strong, generous, and intelligent with a country charm but shrewd forest tenacity—brought the brothel into the modern era and turned it into a profitable business. He planted the seeds of future success by making peace with the community - and most importantly - with law enforcement officers. Becoming a friend, ally, and supporter of the Loesin brothers—who would reign as Fay County Sheriffs for the next four decades—he ensured that the illegal brothel operated without legal interference.

During her time as a housekeeper, she promoted the brothel's philanthropic policy to support local charities and the local business community. During the Great War (World War I), she sent biscuits to local people who were fighting overseas. He also began the practice of weekly health checks on girls (which is now a legal brothel requirement).

Mrs Jesse was also responsible for moving the public house from the town's derelict hotel in 1915 to its permanent site at La Grange - a sprawling white structure nestled among live oaks at the end of a gravel cul-de-sac. 11 acres between Houston and Austin. And, during Lady's tenure, the public house got the name - Chicken Ranch. Money was tight during the Great Depression of the 1930s, so Miss Jessie allowed women to receive produce and livestock in exchange for cash. As a result, the brothel had so many Leghorns and Rhode Island Reds in their yard that they raised poultry for their income and food supply. From this system of chicken exchange arose the legendary name.

In 1961 Miss Jessie died and was mourned by three generations of men whose transition from innocence she had led. He spent his last years in a wheelchair on the porch of a bordello. During her 56 years as a hostess and owner, she took The Chicken Ranch from a no-name brothel to an institution even recognized by the Texas Legislature.

In 1952, Edna Milton joined The Chicken Ranch and became Miss Jessie's first lieutenant at the time of the latter's death. He bought the public house from Miss Jessie's estate and ran it in 1973 until it was closed in an "authoritative trust". In addition to installing air conditioning, he added a few "exotic extras." His mistress - Miss Jessie - was characterized by stable management and an operation that allowed no drink, drugs or noise on the premises. (This philosophy was the precursor to the modern operating business approach that Chicken Ranch uses today.)

The end of The Chicken Ranch in La Grange came on August 1, 1973, when Fayette County Sheriff T.J. Flourney closed the brothel on the orders of Governor Dolph Briscoe. The catalyst for closing the popular and venerable brothel — one of Texas' oldest business establishments — was a crusade by Marvin Zindler, an investigative consumer affairs reporter for television station KTRK-TV (13) in Houston. Zindler, the former chief of consumer protection for the Harris County Sheriff's Department, believed the chicken ranch was controlled by organized crime and stayed in business through political corruption — allegations he was never able to document. However, this moral crusader - who was a skilled huckster and has been described as a publicity-hungry electronic bounty hunter - deftly used his television show to create enough public pressure for the governor to act.

The closure of the brothel was met with great resentment by the residents of La Grange, who accepted the chicken ranch with tolerance, if not pride. As La Grange Journal publisher Lester Zapalak said, "Citizens think it will do no harm and do a lot of good — I don't know anyone who is against it." Sheriff Flourney, a longtime supporter of the brothel during his 41 years as a sheriff's deputy, agreed, adding, "It's been my whole life and my father's whole life, and it's never caused anyone trouble."

After the brothel closed, Edna Milton married an East Texas businessman and later worked as a housekeeper, cashier, payroll clerk, and bookkeeper. The brothel building itself was purchased by a Houston attorney and moved to Dallas, where it was converted into a restaurant and nightclub. It closed after four months due to a malfunctioning heating system and a limited menu (only chicken dishes). Five years later, the furniture and furnishings were auctioned off by the Small Business Administration to recoup funds from a federally guaranteed loan (some of the paintings are now on display at the Chicken Ranch in Pahrump).
