These days, you can buy a pretty expensive Chromebook for much more than you can pay for a shiny new M2 MacBook Air. Even so, the original vision is alive and well in many budget models.
In 2017, a company called Neverware created CloudReady, an unofficial Chromium-based operating system that turns old Macs and PCs into Chromebook-like devices. In 2020, Google acquired the company and promised to turn CloudReady into an official product.
Earlier this year, Google followed through on that promise and renamed the operating system Chrome OS Flex. The beta version was released in February and is now released as a stable product suitable for general use.
But I installed it on a 2011 MacBook Air and it worked perfectly, so there's no reason not to try it on an older model.

The process starts by installing Chrome OS Flex on a USB flash drive, which you can then (optionally) install directly on your Mac. You'll need an 8GB or larger USB key, and make sure to get all the files you need from it, as they will be deleted during the installation process.
Open Chrome and follow the instructions on this page. The only thing that's not 100% clear is that you didn't search for your Mac when asked to identify your Chromebook. Instead, just select Google Chrome OS Flex as the brand and Chrome OS Flex as the model. The installation process only takes a few minutes.
Once booted into Chrome, you'll have the opportunity to either continue running from the USB flash drive or wipe the Mac and install it to the drive. I highly recommend not doing the latter until you've played around for a while.

If you're a current Mac user, you're probably already well integrated into the Apple ecosystem. Chromebooks are built into the Google ecosystem. That alone is enough to make many Mac users say no to it.
Chrome OS is first and foremost a very rough and simple operating system. Most applications are really just front ends to websites. Of course, this is why the OS runs on older machines, but it also means that your choice of apps is very limited. Chrome OS Flex is more limited; it doesn't run all Chrome apps, nor does it offer the option to run Android apps.
MacOS is primarily an elegant user interface. Chrome OS Flex...it's not. Looks like it's made out of Lego bricks. I think anyone who is used to sitting in front of a Mac will find this a pain.
If you're thinking of giving away your old Mac to someone who isn't very tech-savvy, you should definitely consider it.

Chrome OS is as easy to use as it is bulletproof. Google performs all updates automatically. They can open Google and Microsoft Office documents without worrying about application versions. All files are stored in the cloud and Google takes care of the backups, so there is much less chance of losing any files or data. In the worst case scenario, when you reinstall the operating system, all files remain safely in the cloud.
In short, if you want to give your laptop to a friend or family member, you don't have to worry about them offering tech support or putting your head in your hands because they ignore your instructions to use Time Machine and lose all your files, Well, there are many benefits to converting a Mac into a Chromebook. have.

Battery life is unreal, easily longer than a full workday. Overall performance is excellent, even in Rosetta applications. It's light, thin and completely silent. You also get nice speakers, a great keyboard, a good display, and solid microphone quality.
Webcams are still not perfect. Need more ports. Not many iPhone or iPad apps are currently available. You'll have to wait for better optimizations in Rosetta apps.

Does it matter if there is no fan? For most people no. The MacBook Air easily surpasses its predecessors in terms of performance.
