Diamond prices can vary widely. Some can cost a few hundred dollars, while others cost thousands. Some are worth millions, while the Queen's jewels are worth $4 billion.

Diamond Resale Value: How Much Is Your Diamond Worth?

The four C's; cut, color, carat and clarity. If you are looking for a diamond engagement ring, this is important.

A diamond's cut is a style guide used when polishing the stone, not the actual shape. A diamond's symmetry, proportions, and polish can all affect the stone's brilliance and ability to shine.

The color of a diamond can greatly affect its value, as the lack of color often makes it more valuable. However, not only colorless stones are highly revered. Diamonds that have an incredible depth of color are some of the most expensive stones on the market. These stones are known as small or colored diamonds.

The size and weight of a diamond is a major factor in its value. Diamonds are measured in carats, an ancient unit of measurement once used to extract carob seeds. One carat is divided into 100 points, diamonds weighing less than 1 carat are often called pointers. A diamond is usually valued by the carat.

What Are Lab Grown Diamonds? Here's Everything To Know

The clarity of a diamond refers to its imperfections or flaws. Imperfections, also known as inclusions, occur during the crystallization process. Although inclusions are not usually visible to the naked eye, they usually appear as tiny cracks or tiny flecks of soot. Inclusions are present in almost all diamonds on the market, and while this does not detract from the diamond's beauty, a flawless diamond with few or no inclusions is usually more expensive.

Another factor that can determine a diamond's price is its shape; with shiny cutouts, ovals and hearts being the most prized. The fluorescence and rarity of some stones also play a large role in their value. Some of the rarest types of diamonds in the world are fancy diamonds, including black diamonds, blue diamonds, green diamonds, orange diamonds, and pink diamonds. Diamonds of this type are usually highly priced to reflect this.

Diamonds weighing less than one carat can range from 0.01 points to 0.99 points and will be graded accordingly based on the above factors including cut, color and clarity. In theory, you can get a diamond pointer for as little as AU$150 to AU$1,000. However, a flawless diamond weighing around 0.50 carats can fetch upwards of AUD$3,000.

When buying a diamond, the main factor that most buyers consider is the number of carats of the diamond. Depending on cut, color, clarity and shape, 100-point or 1-carat diamonds typically cost between AUD$2,000 and AU$12,000. Remember that this number refers only to the diamond itself and not to any additional features such as the setting or jewelry that the diamond is in.

On average, a diamond buyer will pay between AU$5,500 and AU$60,000 for a 2 carat diamond. This will vary widely based on the various factors discussed above. For example, the 2 carat diamond ring in 18k rose gold (pictured below) is priced much higher than many other 2 carat diamond collections because it has a higher color and clarity.

While it is quite rare, you can potentially purchase a 3 carat diamond ring like this pear shaped diamond ring for as little as AU$6,000. Typically, a 3 carat diamond of higher cut, color and clarity costs between AU$19,000 and AU$100,000. Some flawless diamonds certified by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) can even exceed the AU$150,000 mark.

Despite what you may believe, lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. Therefore, the price of the product will be determined according to the 4C, with one exception. Unlike natural diamonds, artificial diamonds are not mined deep in the earth's crust.

Instead, they are created in a laboratory under highly controlled conditions. Lab-grown diamonds do not require the same hard and expensive labor or equipment used to mine natural diamonds, and thus cost slightly less. According to diamond experts, synthetic stones cost about 30% less than natural stones, which is a big advantage for those looking for beautiful gems without spending a fortune.
