Census: Minnesota Saw Population Growth In Past Year
We see that the western part of the United States is greener than the rest of the country. Same goes for Florida, it's so green. One of the most interesting states on the map is Texas. It has the fastest growing and shrinking regions in the United States.
Most of the pink areas are rural. Most of them are in the Great Plains, Midwest, and Deep South. On the other hand, most of the dark green zones are located in or near major cities.
At the government level, population growth is observed in many countries. Only three states had negative annual population growth: West Virginia (-0.32%), Mississippi (-0.02%) and Illinois (-0.01%). The states with the highest annual rate were Utah (+1.7%), Idaho (+1.61%), Texas (+1.49%) and North Dakota (+1.48%). high birth rate and low death rate, so its number should increase over time. On the other hand, if more people leave the region than come, and the birth rate in the region is low, its population will decrease.
Which areas of the US are growing and which are declining?
U.s. Population Density Mapped
Map using US data. The Census Bureau shows population growth in the United States from 2010 to 2020, showing ten-year population growth in all US states.
Between 2010 and 2020, the population of Maricopa County, Arizona, increased significantly. In ten years, the district has gathered 753,898 people. Below are the most viewed regions:
Phoenix and the surrounding area are growing faster than any other major city in the country. The area's sunny climate and amenities are popular with retirees, but another attraction is buying a home. Families from more expensive markets—particularly California—are moving to the city in droves. It spread during epidemics when many people migrated to rural and uninhabited areas.
Texas counties also saw significant growth, with five of the top 10 winners located in Texas. Texas' main focus is its affordable housing market. In 2021, home prices in the state ranged from $172,500 to $53,310.
Homelessness In The United States
At the other end of the spectrum, here's a look at the top 10 counties with the biggest population declines over the decade:
The biggest drops were along the Great Lakes, including Cook County (which includes the city of Chicago) and Wayne County (which includes the city of Detroit).
Many of these regions, particularly America's Rust Belt, experienced years of population decline during this period. Wayne County is a terrible example of this. Between 1970 and 2020, the region lost a third of its population.
While the map above does a good job of showing where the majority of Americans have moved, it shows big changes in less populated states.
The U.s. Population Was Estimated At 334,233,854 On Jan. 1, 2023
For example, McKenzie County in North Dakota, with a population of just 15,242 in 2020, was the fastest growing county in the United States over the past decade. The region's 138% increase was primarily due to Bakken oil development. Larger communities in Texas are also growing as new energy sources are extracted from rural areas.
Recent demographic changes reflect long-term trends. Many of the states that saw the largest population growth during the COVID-19 pandemic were in large states like Florida and Texas.
Most of these regions are close to large cities, reflecting rural migration and large residential areas. However, it remains to be seen if this trend will continue or if people will start moving to the cities as the housing crisis worsens due to rising interest rates as the COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease.
