Priority for rooms is given to those 55 and older who have access to rapid rehousing assistance, a pathway to permanent supportive housing or a housing voucher. The shelter model is a first for San Diego and addresses the growing call for shelters specifically for an aging homeless population.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria announced the program on Friday, although it began accepting people on May 17 and already houses 17 seniors who have vouchers and are waiting to be matched with permanent housing. A 70-year-old veteran has left the shelter for permanent housing.
