That's the message and focus of a job fair Thursday at the Wayman Palmer YMCA in downtown Toledo.
All participating companies are "friendly", meaning they will be willing to hire people with criminal records.
The event starts at 10 am. at 2:00 pm. and open to all. It's part of a nationwide effort by the nonprofit organization Better Together to help those trying to reenter society after serving time in prison.
Jobs For Felons: Government Help For Felons Looking For Jobs
Hope of Glory Pastor Rick Morris knows how difficult it can be to get a job with a felony on your record because he had to do the same thing decades ago.
"When someone gives me a chance, not only do they save me, they save their children," Morris said, "and they save the people I've affected through my criminal lifestyle."
Morris points out that many people don't understand how difficult it is when criminals get out. Many inherited multiple challenges in addition to regaining their freedom.
"You face a lot of hurdles and obstacles in terms of doing the right thing," Morris said. “They still have bills to deal with. Many of them have children, child support, taxes, fines."

President Joe Biden declared April the month of second chances. Companies at the fair will be open to hiring ex-offenders.
"People know that people who come in here, they have some spots, they're bruised bananas, but they're still usable," Morris said.
Stanley Smith said he was once called a career criminal. Now, she just celebrated seven years with the Lucas County Family Council as an outreach specialist. In the 1990s, Morris gave Smith his first job when he got out of prison.
"My first job was roofing when I got home," Smith said. "Well, sure, it was dirty work. I lifted two barrels over my head on that ladder, but look where I am now."
Job Fair For Former Felons
Nearly a dozen companies have signed up for the event, along with three employment agencies and groups that can help with things like suspended licenses or tickets.
"There will be some community resources there that can help guys with whatever baggage they're carrying," Morris added.
Both men and ex-convicts say a job can keep someone from going back to their old life, and that, in turn, helps everyone.
"The community benefits from it," Morris said. "If someone doesn't return to crime, it's like a ripple effect."

"You know it takes more courage to hold a job or hold a book than it does to hold a gun," he said.
