In FREE residential programs sponsored by the Office on Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), individuals receive skills development and social services in areas such as social welfare, recreation, problem solving, personal development, daily activities, travel training, health care. , healthcare and much more. Independent & Supportive Housing Assistance
24-hour managed housing benefit - People are supported 24 hours a day while they work, travel and enjoy life in their community.
Independent Living Services - People live in an apartment with 1 or 2 roommates. Individuals can move around their community to meet their daily needs. Program staff provide training and support to improve their skills and abilities to become more independent or maintain their housing status. Support professionals visit as often as possible based on individual needs.
Intermediate Care Centers - Individuals receive well-organised, enhanced support from an experienced clinical team and support staff.

The goal of FREE Community Living Opportunities is to provide quality, person-centered, recovery-oriented services that help individuals develop their independence and reach their full potential. Our rehabilitation services include drug treatment, independent living, substance abuse, behavioral counseling, symptom management, skill development and more.

General residence in the community - people with mental illness receive services designed to increase their ability to function as independently as possible.
Young Adults Program - Designed to support people ages 18-30 with mental illness who are aging out of foster care or residential treatment.
Psychiatric Residential/Chemical Abuse Program (MICA) - designed for people with mental illness who also want to recover from chemical addiction.
Special Residential MI/ID Community - Specially designed residential programs for people with co-occurring mental illnesses and intellectual disabilities.
What Is Mental Health Respite Care?
ATP is also certified by the Office of Mental Health and offers rehabilitative services similar to those of a public shelter. Two or three people live in one house in a common area. Services are often provided based on individual needs.
Independent support services - provide assistance to people with intellectual disabilities in finding, renting or purchasing independent living facilities that are an alternative to community living. Program participants receive help with income-based budgeting to obtain grants, maintain landlord-tenant relationships, and ensure a safe and healthy living environment.
OMH Supported Housing Program - provides extended housing with support services to people with mental illness. This housing option is for people who can live in standard public housing and are self-sufficient.
Homeless Housing Program - Provides support services including case management, life skills training, alcohol and drug abuse services, and psychotherapy. FREE supports people who are homeless, as well as those at risk of homelessness or living in conditions unfit for human habitation on Long Island.
Bazelon Center For Mental Health Law
Family Care - Provides community care for people with developmental disabilities in certified families. Family Care creates an atmosphere of family life with all the benefits associated with a family role. Individuals receive refuge, support and protective care from their service providers. Teamwork and relationship building is a big part of what makes the Karis community different from the way we deal with serious mental illness or trauma.
DENVER - "There's Bob, Phil, Jerry and Mickey," Jacob Livengood said, pointing to a fish named after members of the Grateful Dead. They are located in a tank in his favorite room in the house he has lived in for the past year.
“[In] this room, magic happens. We're setting things up here and we have multiple teams every day,” Livengood explained.
Livengood lives in what is known as a rehabilitation center, a facility for long-term treatment of people with serious and chronic mental illnesses.
Psychosocial Rehabilitation: Benefits And Objectives
"My diagnosis is bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder," Livengood said, adding that he also had psychosis and post-traumatic stress disorder when he moved to the Karis community. "The year before I came here, I was in four hospitals. I was in four wards and now I was on the last day of the program."
Annie Wharton is the CEO of Karis Community. He said the organization does not discriminate against or refuse any test, and people typically stay for six months to two years.
“We work with people who struggle with depression, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder. We also have people recovering from substance abuse issues and eating disorders, we run the show,” he explained.
Concerns about mental health and substance use have increased over the past few years as a result of this epidemic. According to the National Association on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 adults develop a mental illness each year and 1 in 20 develop a serious mental illness each year. Meanwhile, suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged 10 to 34.

"Our mission is to provide this community for people to heal together, and that's the learning we have here. That relationship is what heals. The intervention is great, the therapy is amazing, and it's part of the ts process, but that connection and the shared experiences that people have is what makes the biggest difference,” he explained.
The Karis community can accommodate up to 15 residents; each person pays $655 per month. The goal is for people to eventually return to their communities, work and live their lives. A typical day for them includes individual and group therapy and 24/7 access to staff and volunteers.
"From this understanding that we all need a little grace here and there, no one lives unscathed and no one goes through a tough time," he said.
