Sergeant Chester Ward of the Pender County Sheriff's Office said the department received a missing person report early Sunday morning from the mother of one of the Marines after her son did not arrive on a flight home the night before.
Dockery's mother, Heather Glass of Mudd, Oklahoma, said Wednesday that she and another relative drove to the Oklahoma City airport last Saturday night to wait for her son to go home for his grandfather's funeral.
When he didn't show up, Glass' daughter began calling hospitals and jails in North Carolina, while Glass contacted the sheriff's office and her son's sergeant at Camp Lejeune, which resulted in a search.
Glass said she assumed her son died of something like carbon monoxide because all three young Marines died and the sheriff's office did not suspect foul play. Breathing too much carbon monoxide causes victims to pass out.
