Let's face it, if you can't hide on a weekday, skiing in many parts of Vermont is crowded. Witness hour-long traffic jams to the mountain (Stowe), toll plazas (Mt. Snow) and seemingly endless powder day delivery routes (everywhere).
Ski Resorts In Southern Vermont
The good news is, you know where to go to get away from the crowds and Burke Mountain Resort is out in this category. Although as close to White River Junction (where I-89 and I-91 meet) as Stowe is, many people come from New York or Boston, west rather than north. Burke has an annual population of 1,651 (as of the 2020 census), and aside from the 116-room Burke Mountain Hotel, there are few accommodations in the area with more than 50 rooms. As a result, lift lines are almost non-existent and you can still see long stretches of dust after a storm.
Terrain At Berkshire East In Massachusetts Gives Skiers A Challenge
Number two in this category is, unsurprisingly, Londonderry's Magic Mountain. This southern Vermont favorite limits the number of tickets sold and when the parking lot is full, that is. With old-school climbing and terrain, Magic is a quiet throwback to the days before the resorts were crowded.
Pico is another sleepy mountain that people forget about. With his older sister, Killington, managing him, Pico doesn't see nearly as much traffic as his teammates. Two other independent sites made the top five in this category. Middlebury Snow Bowl also sits on the west side of the green, where you can often ski uphill. From the top of Mount Worth you have a choice of steep runs like Allen or Wooded Glades, as well as some twisty trails.
Bolton Valley Resort also scored in this category. Even more "local," the mountain, with its high elevation, great snow and plenty of backcountry, attracts Stowe skiers who want to escape on holidays and weekends.
