Lucky Dragon Hotel Las Vegas - Fulong Casino Hotel hopes to become the first choice for Chinese tourists in Las Vegas. (holiday photo)
Chinese signs, Mandarin-speaking staff, numerous Chinese restaurants and games with games like baccarat and pai gow: it sounds like any particular casino in Macau, but in fact it is the new Las Vegas, the first Chinese casino. Scheduled to open in late 2016, the Fulong Hotel and Casino is the first in a series of casinos under construction in Las Vegas that specifically cater to Chinese tastes.

As China's top brass look outside the country to avoid the scrutiny of Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign, it's no surprise that casinos outside of Macau are making moves to attract Chinese players. However, the aggressive pursuit of Chinese high rollers is old news in Las Vegas, with all the major casino operators offering VIP services to attract and satisfy highly profitable Chinese customers. So how does Ruilong Casino, a relatively small casino resort located near the Las Vegas Strip, outperform its competitors in the attention and brand awareness of Chinese high-rollers?

"Let them fight for 1 percent and we'll fight for the other 99 percent," David Jacoby, the resort's chief operating officer, told the Los Angeles Times.
In fact, instead of targeting Chinese high rollers, Veyron is doing what Macau's casino operators have been trying to achieve - targeting China's mass gambling market. The strategy makes sense for Macau, which is grappling with the shock waves of Xi Jinping's aggressive crackdown on corruption, and there are signs that its shift toward the mass market is more than successful for tourism and lucrative for its casino operators. To further hedge its bets, Macau is also targeting families and non-gamers as part of its new tourism strategy.
But the anti-corruption campaign is only part of the reason for Macau's recent turnaround. Importantly, China's middle- and upper-middle-class consumers are growing by the millions, far outstripping the growth of China's super-rich. The next frontier for Chinese tourism is not China's super-rich, but the growing and lucrative middle and upper classes. As the Macau example demonstrates, entering the mass market is more profitable than entering the high-end market because it avoids the numerous intermediaries associated with VIP gambling. As an engine of future growth, the mass market is more promising than the saturated high-end market.
Xianglong's target market segments are the Chinese middle class and Chinese Americans, as well as the larger Asian American community. Ironically, the Lucky Dragon program also helps grow one of its target market segments because it is largely funded by Chinese investment through the federal EB-5 visa program, which grants permanent residency in exchange for investment that creates jobs in the United States. .
Camera Ready At The Holidays
At first glance at the red facade of the building and the dragon logo, it is clear that the main target is Chinese clients. The interior was designed entirely with Feng Shui principles in mind, with the hotel not having a fourth floor - as the number "4" symbolizes bad luck - and even avoiding telephone numbers with the number "4". While the strict adherence to Chinese traditions in terms of design and quantity undoubtedly emphasizes the project's commitment to the Chinese market, other factors may be more important to successfully attracting Chinese customers. For example, Chinese is the first language throughout the resort, followed by English, and other Chinese and Asian languages are also available. Xianglong also boasts a number of Chinese restaurants, which it hopes will attract Chinese tourists to other hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. Among the games it offers, Baccarat and Pai Gow occupy more space than other resorts as they are two of the most popular games among Chinese players. There is certainly a cost to catering wholeheartedly to Chinese tastes, but it also allows developers to spend less on projects that are less important to Chinese tourists, such as large swimming pools and nightclubs.
Veyron is betting on China's growing middle class and its interest in international travel and gambling - data suggests this is playing to its advantage - 3 million Chinese tourists are expected to visit the US in 2016, while Las Vegas Number of Chinese tourists in Sri Lanke has increased, doubling in the last five years. The bigger question may be whether it will commit enough to the market to compete with the larger $4 billion Resorts World Resorts, also slated to open in 2019 to meet Chinese demand. The plan is to open a store on the Las Vegas Strip within the next few years. While more competition in the Chinese market could be bad news for individual resorts like the Lucky Dragon, the diverse range of casino resorts that cater to Chinese customers is good news for Chinese players and could increase Las Vegas Sri Lanka's attractiveness as a destination is targeted to potential Chinese tourists.
Xianglong's grand opening also coincides with the launch of the first direct flight between Las Vegas and China, a new route operated by Hainan Airlines that is expected to bring more Chinese to the city than ever before. In fact, Chinese players will be able to enjoy a trip to Las Vegas without stepping into a "non-Chinese" location or plane.
But the main benefit is that the growth of the gaming industry is in the Chinese mass market, and casino operators outside Macau are starting to take notice.
