Social Skills Program For Autism
This workshop will help you gain understanding and knowledge of social skills in the autism spectrum disorder community. Educators and others working with this population will learn why group work on social skills is important, how to start a group, how to help parents with social skills at home, and how to help children with ASD become more productive citizens.
Pre Teen/teen Social Skills Group For Winter 2022 Begins January 18th!
You will leave with specific ways to support children with ASD, as well as children with Asperger's Syndrome, Non-Verbal Learning Disorder and ADHD.
Robin Lurie-Meyerkopf Robin Lurie-Meyerkopf, MD, is the former Associate Director, Director and Consultant of the Asperger's Association of New England. She has over 20 years of teaching experience and runs social skills groups for children and adolescents with Asperger's syndrome, ADHD and non-verbal learning disabilities. She received her master's degree from Antioch University and completed the Certificate Program in Autism Spectrum Disorders. Robin has worked with students from elementary school through college in a variety of settings. She conducts workshops for parents and professionals throughout the United States and has presented at the National Conference on Child and Adult Attention Deficit Disorder (CHADD) in Washington, D.C. and Anaheim, California, and at the Transition Conference at Lynn University . Because of her experience, Robin understands the challenges of working with a diverse group of students.

Our social skills program is based on the belief that a child's emotional, physical and social development can be enhanced through cooperative, non-competitive play. We can model familiar play situations while providing structure and support to guide and teach children as they interact. Essentially, we are “slowing down” children’s social lives. Using signals, prompts and scenarios, we help children enter the play situation and maintain participation. Our counselors use positive reinforcement, exercise and modeling to develop social skills such as partnership, turn-taking, flexible problem solving and good sportsmanship. Overall, we provide an environment that feels safe and allows children to take appropriate social risks.
Secret Agent Society (sas) Small Group Program. — The Social Space
All children referred to our program begin by attending an initial interview with their parents or guardians. Information from the interview is used as a guide to determine the best possible placement for each child. After the interview, children are placed into small groups of three to eight based on age, compatible interests and behavioral styles to provide opportunities for interactive learning. Each activity-based group is led by counselors who meet with the group weekly for seventy-minute sessions. These groups aim to help children improve their social skills while engaging in a variety of collaborative children's activities, including informal conversations, cooperative play and creative group activities. All groups conclude with a short lunch break during which group events are reviewed and discussed, thereby reinforcing skills learned and deepening relationships with peers.
Our counselors promote positive interactions and social skills through a variety of therapeutic activities and discussion topics. Counselors select specific interventions to build trust and develop positive relationships with peers. Although each session may vary depending on group functioning and developmental level, all groups follow a structured routine in which specific skills are taught and reinforced through a careful step-by-step approach to social learning. In younger and less experienced groups, counselors help children develop basic practical communication skills such as listening and turning. Counselors also provide special training to help children express feelings and cope with differences in more adaptive ways. As groups grow in age and experience, children learn to interact at a higher level over time, using skills such as problem solving, negotiation and teamwork. These skills form the building blocks needed to form and maintain friendships.
Triumph Centre's social skills groups serve a wide range of children, adolescents and young adults aged 5 to 29 years. Our group members are diverse, with some suffering from ADHD, Executive Functioning Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Nonverbal Learning Disorder, Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder, and Anxiety Disorder. The most important treatment strategy for most children with Asperger's syndrome (AS) and high-functioning autism (HFA) involves improving communication and social skills.
