The Greyhound Bus Station at the Plaza Hotel in downtown Las Vegas will be replaced by a new facility after nearly 50 years there.
Plaza CEO Jonathan Josell announced plans Wednesday to redevelop the 48,500-square-foot space located on Main Street near the Fremont Street Experience to include new dining, entertainment or retail opportunities.

"We are very excited to host this new era on the highway," Josell said in a statement. "Main Street is where downtown began, and today remains the heart of downtown, connecting a thriving arts district, state-of-the-art City Hall, the Plaza, the Fremont Street Experience, our newest neighborhood, and much more."
Josell said the Plaza will partner with the city of Las Vegas to build a pedestrian walkway leading to a new bridge connecting the hotel-casino on Main Street to Symphony Park.
"We are thrilled to partner with Jonathan and our friends at the Plaza Hotel," Mayor Carolyn Goodman said in a statement. “This connection will further enhance the vibrancy of downtown, including the Plaza and Symphony Park, and make the area more walkable. It is exciting and gratifying to see downtown revitalization thanks to the public-private partnership with the Plaza. "
The Greyhound Bus Terminal will be abandoned by the middle of next year as talks with investors have already begun about potential projects for the site.

"With Greyhound's relocation, we look forward to transforming the bus station into a new, dynamic downtown destination that will enhance the sense of community and community on Main Street," said Josell.
Greyhound spokeswoman Crystal Booker said the bus company plans to stay in Las Vegas, but was not ready to provide additional information about those plans.
"Greyhound can confirm that it plans to relocate to Las Vegas in early 2021," Booker said in an email. We are currently in the middle of planning and cannot confirm further details at this time,” he said.
The walking trail will take downtown visitors along the Union Pacific Railroad to new residential and commercial developments in Symphony Park. The course will feature desert scenery, lighting and a decorative protective wall

The projects fit into plans by Tamaris Group, the plaza's owner, and the city of Las Vegas to revitalize downtown.
Tamers sold the Las Vegas club in 2015 to make way for the recently opened Circa Resort. Other projects at the Plaza, including more than 100 guest rooms and suites and the Core Arena, an outdoor rink and multi-purpose facility on Main Street, are also in the works.
Myron Martin, president and CEO of the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, said that while he hasn't seen the details of the project, he expects it to be a win-win for all parties involved. Smith Center is located near Symphony Park
"While I don't know the specifics of this particular plan, I'm sure Jonathan Joschel and the city of Las Vegas are working on a plan that will add value to both sides of the railroad," Martin said. A well thought out and designed pedestrian bridge should be well received I could envision a time when artists performing at the Smith Center could cross a safe, well-maintained, attractive bridge to get to their hotel, and our audience could go to dinner and drinks pre-post.

The Greyhound Bus Station closed its doors Tuesday after nearly 50 years of service on the downtown Las Vegas plaza.
The Plaza announced Monday that the station has moved from Sunrise Road to the Regional Transportation Commission's South Strip Transfer Terminal near McCarran International Airport.
"Hello. Farewell is the end of an era," CEO Jonathan Jossell said in a tweet Monday, referring to the terminal's closure.
