Just How Hot Does It Get In Phoenix, Arizona?
A 31-year-old record was broken Wednesday as unrelenting triple-digit heat continued to scorch Phoenix, Arizona, for the 144th day of the year. The previous record for 100-degree days in a year was set in 1989, with a total of 143 days.
The record reached an astonishing 145 days in Phoenix on Friday afternoon, when the mercury again climbed above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. With an afternoon high of 102 degrees Fahrenheit, it also broke the previous record for daily high temperature of 101 degrees, set in 1991.
The city could hit record highs over the next few days, with high temperatures in the 90s forecast to drop into the 100s across major metro areas of the desert Southwest by early in the week. However, it's been over 100 degrees in the city. Phoenix last recorded 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Oct. 27.
In a given year, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the official weather station for the city of Phoenix, typically averages 102 days with high temperatures of 100 degrees or higher.

The worst of the heat for much of the desert Southwest came last Tuesday, with the worst of the heat for cities like San Francisco and Redding, California, delayed until midweek.
Seasonally warm conditions are forecast for much of the southwestern United States early in the week. However, the southwestern Sahara can experience some truly scorching temperatures.
The warmest conditions will create the interior of southern Arizona, southern Nevada, and southern California. Daytime high temperatures in these areas are typically 10-15 degrees above normal in mid-October.
Typical high temperatures across the desert Southwest range from the low 80s to low 90s in cities like Las Vegas, and the mid-90s in cities like Phoenix and Palm Springs, Calif., in Death Valley, Calif.
