Good Macbook For College Students - It's August and back-to-school shopping is just around the corner. A new computer is often at the top of the list. With so many options, it can be difficult to choose which computer is best for you or your student.
There are three choices of laptops in the Apple range - MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Below I compare three configurations from these examples. I compared their specifications as closely as possible. Each configuration has 256 GB of hard-storage and 8 GB of RAM. I don't recommend the 128GB solid state configuration because many students run out of space very quickly. As you can see, each has its pros and cons, but I have a general recommendation.
Good Macbook For College Students
The new 12-inch MacBook with Retina display gets points for its sleek style and design...but that's about it. The thin profile makes the laptop feel closed and unstable for typing. A laptop's single USB-C port makes it difficult for many students who want to charge their computer and use a USB drive at the same time. Another drawback is the high price and slow processor. The 12" MacBook starts at $1,299.
Mac To School. What's The Best Macbook For Students?
MacBook Air - 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13″ screen (11 as shown above), $1,199
The MacBook Air is a great value compared to the MacBook 12. "You get USB and Lightning ports, and up to 12 hours of battery life for the MacBook Air 13". You also get a more powerful processor for less money. The MacBook Air is not lightweight. It also retains the magnetic charging port that the new MacBook lacks. This feature has saved many laptops from damage after tripping over power lines. The only downside is the non-retina screen, which isn't a big deal if you don't mind the low resolution.
MacBook Pro retina - 2.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13″ screen (15″ also available), $1499
The most expensive option in this comparison, the MacBook Pro 13″ retina has a powerful processor and a beautiful screen. It is an excellent choice for students who require advanced processing for school work, especially for photography, video and other design work. The Retina display produces sharp picture quality, and the presence of HDMI, SD, Lightning and USB ports makes it a multitasking machine.
Best Macbook For Students 2022
*Note: I didn't look at the non-retina MacBook Pro because Apple hasn't updated the model since 2012, and it doesn't come standard with a solid state drive. The non-Retina MacBook Pro doesn't compete with the current technology in Apple's laptop line.
Overall Recommendation: For students in high school and younger, I recommend the MacBook Air 13” or 11”. This laptop offers great value, great battery life, and solid performance to meet the needs of young students. I recommend it for students in colleges and elsewhere
. This is a powerful and durable laptop that will last a long time. It has the versatility and performance to handle the most advanced tasks.

Covid 19 Vaccine Requirement For College Students 'under Discussion': Pritzker
When I went to college 10 years ago, my trusty laptop was a PowerBook G4 12″. This is one of my favorite Macs of all time. It still works great. Last May, I did a review of the MacBook 12″ retina, comparing two 12″ Mac laptops. It's summer, and that means back to school. Here are the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models you might want to buy in seasonal sales before students head off to college.
For many retailers, it's the annual sales event, back-to-school season, a time for parents to prepare for the next school year for their children, and often times, for teenagers to head off to college. This usually involves paying for new computer hardware, and that's where Apple comes in.
Apple's MacBook Air and MacBook Pro line is extensive, covering the premium and expensive ends of the market with hardware suitable for any task. From basic tasks like report writing to processor-intensive applications for college work.
Here are Apple's recommendations for which MacBook models you should consider if you're in the market for a new portable Mac for your family's students.
Macbook Air M2 Vs. Macbook Air M1: The $200 Question
If you need an affordable notebook that can multitask, it's hard to go wrong with the MacBook Air.
Packed with the same intelligence as its 13-inch MacBook Pro counterpart, the MacBook Air offers all the features and capabilities a student needs. From filling out book reports to joining Zoom calls.
However, even if you expect the new M2-equipped MacBook Air to come with new features, it's not the best option if you're talking about price. It has the latest chip and many improvements over the previous model, but you can still get the M1 version.
Indeed, with price so important these days, families may feel they could do more with a $200 price difference between the $999 base M1 version and the $1,199 M2 variant. This $200 can be used to pay for other on-campus supplies or a few meals.

The base M1 MacBook Air has two customizable upgrades that include memory and storage. The entry-level model offers 8GB of memory, 16GB of storage, and 512GB, 256GB of storage with 1TB and 2TB upgrades.
A budget-friendly recommendation is usually to ignore updates or search for an archive and then save if necessary. There are external storage options, such as an external hard drive or flash drive.
If needed, upgrade to 16GB of storage for $200. This is a notebook that will be used for several years, so you'll want it to have as much functionality as possible, and not something that can't be updated later.
We've already made the MacBook Air a very capable notebook. The M2 version is probably the best option for the mid-range category.
Apple Back To School 2022 Offers: Deals On Macbook Air M1, Macbook Pro, Ipads And What To Pick
More expensive than the M1 MacBook Air, the M2 MacBook Air adds more to the mix for less. For starters, you get a bigger screen, MagSafe 3 charging, a better 1080p FaceTime HD camera and a Magic Keyboard for ease of use.
Then there's the M2 Chip, which is faster than its M1 counterpart, with better GPU and memory upgrade options, but it also has a Media Engine. Derived from the M1 Pro and M1 Max, the M2's Media Engine encodes and decodes faster than conventional CPUs.
This is especially important for video editing and video-related projects that are common in classrooms. Filmmaking students still want to look for a more powerful model than the M2 MacBook Air.
Starting at $1,199, you get a great base to build with an 8-core GPU, 8GB of memory, and 256GB of storage. You can upgrade to a 10-core GPU for $100, but that extra graphics power is important and only if you have the extra cash.

Integrated memory upgrades from 8GB to 16GB and 24GB, and storage starts at 256GB and goes up to 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. Since memory has the biggest impact on performance, focus on upgrades before paying for storage.
In this price bracket it's fine to go for the minimum storage upgrade, if you don't have to use an external drive, you can always opt for this to save on the high price.
The recommendation will be for a 10-core GPU, 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage, for a total of $1,699.
This setup also provides a 35W dual USB-C port compact power adapter or a 67W USB-C power adapter. Both are useful, but the latter is probably better if you have enough adapters for other handheld devices so you can charge your MacBook Air faster.
Apple Student Discount Guide: Savings For Students And Teachers
If money is no object, or if you have enough budget to buy a Mac, you should check out the 14-inch MacBook Pro.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro is also available and ships in a variety of configurations, though it starts at the top end. However, you can save $200 in weight and backpack space by finding a similar model.
At this level, you will also benefit from many features that are very convenient for power users. The 14-inch display is a one-to-one Liquid Retina XDR display with LED backlighting for 1,600 nits of maximum brightness for HDR content, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and ProMotion support.
Then you have plenty of ports at your disposal, including an SD card reader, HDMI port and MagSafe for charging.
