Why College Students Need Renters Insurance
At the end of the summer, parents often pack up their college kids and move into dorms or off-campus housing. There is the usual inventory - towels, bed linen, laptop, and laundry supplies. However, one thing can be overlooked: renters insurance.
Students living in college dormitories may be covered by their parents' homeowner's insurance. However, students living off campus should purchase renters insurance to ensure their property is safe.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, the average renter's insurance policy costs $180 a year, or about $15 a month. This is a relatively small amount to ensure your belongings are covered.
, you may not need it. Students living in a dormitory may be covered by their homeowner's parent's insurance policy. Mike Gula, at Hippo Insurance, told Insider that some homeowner's insurance companies offer "off-campus students," where you list your student accommodation on the policy.
Does My Roommate's Renters Insurance Cover My Stuff?
, you must purchase renter's insurance. Even if your landlord doesn't need it, renter's insurance helps protect your personal property from theft, fire, and water damage. It also protects you from personal liability if someone is injured in your rental. The question is not whether you need renters insurance, but whether you can lose your belongings and replace yourself.
A cautionary tale by director and actress Isa Rae keeps renters insured. Shortly after college, he received a scholarship to study in New York City. As the New York Times reported, "One night, thieves broke into his apartment and stole thousands of dollars' worth of equipment, including all of his computers, cameras and tapes." If he has renters insurance, he will replace his equipment. Instead, it was a total loss and he ended up leaving New York and returning home.
Renters insurance does not cover your roommate. If you have roommates, each room should have its own policy. Renter's insurance only covers the insured. This does not extend to other people living in the apartment or house.
One component of renters insurance is loss of use. Loss of use provides temporary housing compensation when a covered event renders your rental unit uninhabitable.
Insurance Tips For College Students
Yael Wissner-Levy, vice president of communications for Lemonade Insurance, told Insider that if a student is displaced in the middle of the year due to the pandemic, Lemonade allows you to stop and start your policy whenever you want. Insurance policy to new address if necessary
Wissner-Levy explained that in order to cause a "loss of use", the evacuation must be officially announced by "civil authorities" - such as the governor of your state declaring a state of emergency or signing an executive order that stops it. - Living on campus - for your policy to cover your accommodation elsewhere.
He added that this is "especially true for international students studying abroad in the United States - or even just in-state students - who may not have a family support system nearby and may need short-term hotel stays."
Renter's insurance companies have different "loss of use" policies, so it's best to check with your carrier
