Health Insurance For International Students - Georgia Tech is proud to offer its Student Insurance Program (SHIP) to incoming undergraduate and graduate students, as well as eligible dependents who do not yet have insurance. 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 policy years administered by United Care Student Resources (UHCSR).

Health Insurance For International Students
Students in the mandatory group must maintain insurance during their program of study at Georgia Tech. Twice per policy year (fall and spring/summer), you must enroll yourself and eligible dependents in the mandatory plan.
International Student Health Insurance
Students (including Postdocs, J1 Scholars, and OPTs) who do not belong to the required cohort and have earned at least 4 credits may enroll during the open registration period.
Please enroll in the fall semester only, and re-enroll in the spring semester (December to January) of the spring semester (including summer).
For the next policy year, all eligible and elective students must enroll in the fall (the above two enrollment options are now available) to maintain consistent coverage from policy year to policy year.
In response to Covid-19, students who previously attended face-to-face classes but take an online or hybrid class schedule in the fall and earn at least 4 credit hours are eligible to enroll in the volunteer plan. .

GRA Care Plan Option is a medical plan offered by the University of Georgia System. This option replaces the United Care Student Resources/Student Insurance Plan offered by the Institute. Because the GRA Care Plan option through OneUSG does not meet federal guidelines for international students with F-1 or J-1 visa requirements, graduate research assistants must obtain this coverage prior to enrollment. Limitations should be carefully considered.

There are significant changes to the exemption requirements for international students this year. Previously, international students could use PGH or any other "offshore" plan that did not meet the ACA's standards and was exempt from the mandatory pot category. Beginning this year, Georgia Tech international students cannot drop out of PGH or non-ACA compliant plans. International students must be enrolled in a mandatory enrollment or opt-out plan in accordance with the ACA.
This fee is a mandatory tuition fee charged to all students who take 4 or more credits per semester (fall, spring, summer). This fee covers most of the stamp service and is not insurance.
According to the Georgia Board of Governors, the following groups of students will be charged for mandatory student insurance for tuition.

All undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in programs require proof of insurance as determined by the USG institution. Currently, Georgia Tech only requires mandatory insurance for graduate students in the CHBE and BMED programs and APPH majors.
All graduate students who receive a tuition waiver as part of a graduate assistantship award determined by a USG institution.

Students in the above groups who have existing insurance that meets/exceeds the insurance requirements are eligible for exemption. You must request an exemption during the free registration/exemption period.

If you are waived, UnitedCare Student Resources will notify the GT Bursar's Office and the charge will be removed from your bursar account. The compulsory student insurance fee will automatically be included in the tuition fee and if the waiver submitted is approved and the insurance fee is paid, the fee will be refunded by the GT Bursar's office.
Students will be charged mandatory insurance tuition if they belong to the Georgia Board of Directors mandatory group. If a student does not belong to the required group but is taking at least 4 credit hours, the student is eligible for the volunteer project.
Currently, only Stamps Services Pharmacy does insurance claims for prescriptions. Stamps Services does not bill for medical services provided outside GT Student Ins Co. Also, with the exception of the UnitedCare Student Resource Plan, STAMPS services are not covered by managed care contracts. Students who do not have GT student insurance and receive a fee (most services come from student fees) will pay at the time of service and provide a statement that the student can submit to their insurance company.

Yes, you can enroll in GT Student Insurance. From the UnitedCare Student Resources GT Registration webpage (link above), select the Medical – Voluntary Student Plan policy.
In many cases, all or part of the premium is paid by the fellowship. Please contact your program officer or grant administrator for more information.
