Family Farm Life Farm Equipment on the Road Farm Fatigue Combine Harvester Fire Prevention Farm Safety for Children Farm Fire Protection On March 18, 1876, the farmers of Lennox and Addington counties met in the village of Newburgh, Ontario, to consider forming a mutual fire insurance company under by the provisions of the Province of Ontario. Farmers needed insurance to protect their property and livestock. As a result of this meeting, the required number of subscribers was obtained.
On August 8, 1876, an organizational meeting was held in Newburgh at which five directors were elected to serve until the annual meeting for the election of directors under the Insurance Act. The directors cast included: John Percy, Henry Huffman, James Daly, N.A. Caton and Marshall Huffman. On August 17, 1876, the first policy was issued to Peter Miller, Ernestown.

The company operated under the name Lennok & Addington Grange Mutual Fire Insurance Company until 1885 when it changed to The Lennok and Addington Mutual Fire Insurance Company. In September 2003, the company's name was changed to L&A Mutual Insurance Company.
The first annual meeting of the policyholders was held at the Music Hall, Campbell House, Napanee, Ontario, on February 10, 1877. At the 1st annual meeting the following were elected as directors: John Percy, N.A. Caton, J.B. Ailsworth, Henry Huffman, Marshall Huffman; The auditors were Peter R. Miller and Thomas Anderson. After the adjournment of the annual meeting, the directors met separately and elected John Percy as president and James Daly as secretary-treasurer and manager.
It appears that although the organizational meeting was held in Newburgh, Ontario, the company office was established in Napanee (probably because Napanee was the county seat). The company's first office was over Cokall's Grocers in the Grange block. The company also briefly leased upstairs space on John Street and Dundas Street in Napanee until they purchased their current location in 1947. An office building was constructed at 32 Mill Street and was ready for occupation in June 1948.
In 1959, Farm Mutual Insurance Companies of Ontario formed Farm Mutual Reinsurance Plan Inc. to act as reinsurer for member companies owned by them.

L & A Mutual has co-owned this company since its inception. Farm Mutual Reinsurance Plan Inc. was the first Canadian-owned reinsurer and now reinsures agricultural mutuals across Canada.
In 1968, Ontario's insurance regulator approved the requirement for agricultural mutuals to carry wind and liability insurance. This allowed Ontario agricultural mutuals to expand their product line. In 1974, the Fire Mutual Guarantee Fund was established. This fund is intended to be used for the liquidation of an agricultural mutual insurance company if it runs into financial difficulties. This fund has never been used. The establishment of the mutual fire guarantee fund also ended the premium that agricultural mutual insurance companies in Ontario operated.
L & A Mutual currently markets its products through independent brokers and a group of company representatives. Products now available include farm owner packages, home owner packages, home owner packages, small commercial packages, yacht packages and auto insurance.

AFM is part of the Adopt-A-Road program, where volunteers clean regional roads by picking up roadside litter. With this program, groups or individuals adopt a section of roadway and help keep it clean. On October 5th we rolled up our sleeves, donned high visibility vests and lined Northumberland Street in Ayr to pick up litter.
