Is Macbook Good For College - It's August and back-to-school shopping is right around the corner. At the top of the list is always a new laptop. With so many options, it can be overwhelming to decide which laptop is best for you or your student.
In the Apple line, there are three laptop options - MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Below, I compare three configurations from these models. I have used their details as accurately as possible. Each configuration has a solid state drive with 256GB and 8GB of RAM. I don't recommend setting up a 128GB solid state drive as it's easy for most students to run out of room quickly. As you can see, there are pros and cons to each of these, but I have some general recommendations.
Is Macbook Good For College
The new 12″ MacBook with Retina screen gets points for its sleek body and design… but that’s about it. The thin profile makes the laptop feel flimsy and unreliable for typing. The laptop's USB-C port makes it ideal for many students who want to charge a laptop and use a USB drive at the same time. Another drawback is the high cost and slow logistics. The 12" MacBook starts at $1299.
Macbook Pro 14
MacBook Air - 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 Processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13″ screen (also 11″ as pictured above), $1199
The MacBook Air is a big improvement in value over the MacBook 12". You get a USB and Thunderbolt port and a long battery life, up to twelve hours for the MacBook Air 13". You also get a powerful processor for less money. The MacBook Air is lightweight without feeling bulky. It retains the magnetic port missing from the new MacBook. This feature has saved many laptops from destruction when they disconnect the power cord. The only downside is the non-retina screen which isn't a big deal if the low resolution doesn't bother you.
MacBook Pro retina – 2.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 Processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13″ screen (15″ also available), $1499
The most expensive option in this comparison, the MacBook Pro 13 "retina, carries a high-power processor and a good screen. It is a great choice for students whose school work requires intensive processing, especially for photos, videos and other processing tasks. The retina screen makes for sharp picture quality, and the availability of HDMI, SD, thunderbolt and USB ports makes it a powerful multitasking device.

*Note: I haven't reviewed the non-retina MacBook Pro because Apple hasn't updated the model since 2012, and it doesn't have a standard solid-state drive. The non-retina MacBook Pro doesn't compete with other current technologies that Apple has in its other laptop lines.
Overall Recommendation: For high school and junior high school students, I recommend the 13" or 11" MacBook Air. This laptop offers great value, great battery life and solid performance to meet the needs of young students. For students in college and beyond, I recommend them
. This is a sturdy and durable laptop that will last for years. It has flexibility and functionality to handle more advanced tasks.

When I went to college 10 years ago, my trusted laptop was a 12″ PowerBook G4. This is one of my favorite Macs of all time. It still works well. I did a review of the MacBook 12″ retina last June comparing two 12″ Mac laptops.
