Best Types Of Life Insurance Policies For Veterans
Life insurance policies designed for active duty military and veterans may not require a medical exam. Age, gender, health and smoking status are also not usually factors that military life insurance companies use to determine premiums. Understanding how military life insurance works, as well as the costs and benefits, can help current and former military members choose a plan that works best for them and their families.
If you are an active duty member of the military, one of the benefits you can receive is life insurance through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Service Members Group Life Insurance (SGLI) program. The policy is written by Prudential and offers coverage for 120 days after you leave the military.
Service members can choose a specific amount of SGLI coverage, in increments of $50,000, with options available up to $500,000. The recently passed Fallon Act increased this maximum amount of coverage for dependent families from $400,000 to $500,000. SGLI has a standard rate of coverage, which is six cents for every $1,000 in coverage.
As part of SGLI coverage, service members may be eligible for Service Members Group Life Insurance Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI) benefits. If you experience certain injuries while on active duty, such as blindness or amputation, you may receive payments through this policy. TSGLI is billed as part of the SGLI premium and is a flat rate of $1 per month.
Guide To Insurance For Active Military And Veterans
Service members who are totally disabled, as defined by military qualifications, while on leave may be eligible for a service group disability insurance benefit. This allows an SGLI member to maintain their life insurance coverage for up to two years after retirement at no additional cost.
If you are considering non-paid status with the Ready Reserve or National Guard, there are two requirements for full SGLI coverage that you must meet. You must drill for points instead of pay, and must commit to 12 periods of passive training throughout the year. In here
