Insurance Commissioner Hopeful The State's Insurance Crisis Will Subside By End Of Year
"We are under pressure from insolvencies, multiple bankruptcies and others exiting our market at their own losses," said Jim Donelon, Louisiana's insurance commissioner.

Since Hurricane Ida hit the state last August, four businesses have gone bankrupt, leaving many families without money to fix their homes.
More than 60,000 homeowners were also forced to find new coverage. Fitzaros is one of them.
Deadline Extended For Policyholders Of Failed Insurance
"The mold was just top to bottom, the kids' room in particular took on a lot of water," mom Nicole Ficcaro said. "We had to throw away a lot of toys, books and clothes."

More than eight months have passed since Ida roared ashore, and Fikaros' house is still without walls. They were waiting for an insurance check before their insurer lost the loss. In the meantime, they paid for the apartment in addition to the mortgage loan.
"You just assume you're paying for insurance all the time and you think they're going to take care of you," Nicole Ficcaro said. "You never expect them to just go away."
Insurance Companies Will Cover Some Additional Costs For Ida Victims In Louisiana After Biden Push
If businesses in Louisiana go under, if the state can't find another insurer to take over the claims, they will pay policyholders through the Louisiana Insurance Guaranty Fund, its safety net for failing businesses.
"I believe these people will see better service and faster payments because the Guaranty Fund has the money they need," Donelon said. "Compared to bankrupt companies that had no money."
Fitzgerald said she hopes she gets her check soon: "I just want to get my kids back home so they can do what kids need to do and we can be home as a family."
She also said it's scary not knowing if her family will have insurance when hurricane season starts again.
Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Holds Town Hall Amid Ongoing Homeowners Insurance Crisis
The state offered insurance to homeowners who were not approved by other companies. However, it is considered a "market of last resort" because it is the most expensive insurance in the country. After Hurricane Katrina, the state sponsored 173,000 policies.
"We know it's going to expand again because it's hard for people to get coverage in coastal areas," Donelon said. "We've seen the biggest exodus of national carriers from the Gulf."
Donelon is optimistic that many insurance companies will return to the state after years of mild weather.
However, Colorado State University predicts this upcoming hurricane season will be another above average year with 19 named storms. Select an option below to view providers serving your state or change zip code
