During training, Snodgrass injured his back while flying a helicopter in Korea. Snodgrass tore through his wounds, knowing he would be needed on the battlefield.
His unit was targeted for the first invasion of Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom. In April 2003, the attack vehicle was attacked by the enemy. The force of the blast knocked Snodgrass unconscious, causing further injuries, and a traumatic brain injury (TBI), caused by repeated exposure to all the blasts. These injuries, along with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), forced Snodgrass to be honorably discharged in October 2005.
For his service, Snodgrass received awards including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Naval Service Promotion Ribbon, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
Since returning home, Snodgrass' condition has worsened. In August 2016, he suffered a spinal cord injury that left him partially paralyzed and at risk of becoming permanently confined to a wheelchair, according to the profile.
