Which Macbook Is Best For College Student - It's August and back to school shopping is just around the corner. A new laptop is often at the top of the list. With so many options, it can be overwhelming to decide which laptop is best for you or your student.
Within the Apple line, there are three laptop options: MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro. Below I compare three configurations of these models. I explained their specifications as closely as I could. Each configuration has a 256GB solid state drive and 8GB of RAM. I do not recommend the 128GB solid state drive configuration, as it is easy for most students to run out of space very quickly. As you can see, each of these has advantages and disadvantages, but I have a general recommendation.

The MacBook Air is a huge improvement in value over the 12" MacBook. You get USB and Thunderbolt ports and much longer battery life, up to 12 hours for the MacBook Air 13". You're also getting a more powerful processor for less money. The MacBook Air is light without feeling flimsy. It also retains the missing magnetic charging port from the new MacBook. This feature has saved many laptops from destruction after a trip down the power cord. The only downside is the non-retina display, which isn't a big deal if you don't mind the lower resolution.
Retina MacBook Pro: Dual Intel Core i5 2.7GHz processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13″ display (15″ also available), $1,499
The most expensive option in this comparison, the MacBook Pro 13″ Retina, comes with a powerful processor and a nice display. It is a good choice for students who need more processing intensive school work, especially for photography, video and other design work. The retina display provides sharp picture quality and the availability of HDMI, SD, Thunderbolt and USB ports makes it a multitasking device.

*Note: I haven't reviewed the non-retina MacBook Pro because Apple hasn't updated the model since 2012, and it doesn't come standard with a solid state drive. The non-retina MacBook Pro is not competitive with the other current technology that Apple has in the rest of its laptop line.
