Best Car Insurance Rates Alberta - For a number of reasons, the cost of auto insurance for the average driver decreases as they get older. Your insurance history and driving record get longer. Teen drivers listed as your secondary drivers will get their own policy. You no longer drive every day. You downsize and sell one of your cars. The list continues.
But even checking these lifestyle changes, some insurance companies offer cheaper rates in the market for experienced drivers.
Best Car Insurance Rates Alberta
We looked at data generated by the hundreds of thousands of auto insurance quotes completed on the site each year and determined that the insurance company that offered you the lowest rate for your 20th, 30th, and 40th year of life may not be the right one for you later on. . in life.

To represent the lifetime cost of auto insurance premiums, we used real data from people who filled out quotes on our site. We removed outliers: individuals with either very expensive auto insurance rates (because they are rated as high-risk drivers) and those with very low auto insurance rates (for example, because they don't use their cars for commuting).
For the record, we have decided to exclude very young drivers because if you are in your early twenties the insurance costs are extremely high. But after the age of 25 you are a fully-fledged adult driver in the eyes of insurance companies.
However, some companies are trying to maintain a customer base of 40 and older drivers, and by that we mean offering lower premiums to those customers.
Cheapest Car Insurance For New Drivers
Why? Every insurance company has a different risk tolerance. Some are more willing to insure younger, younger drivers (who are considered high-risk drivers), others are more focused on long-term drivers, so it's important to find the right fit for you.
To illustrate, let's look at a map of Ontario. Company B offers the lowest rates for drivers aged 30 and older. Around the late 1930s to early 1940s, all four companies join in and offer roughly the same price. But at age 42, Company B starts charging customers more.
Company A, on the other hand, charges drivers age 30 and older the most, but starts lowering rates until age 40. Up to age 50, Company A is the cheapest option, with rates that stay low over the years.
If an Ontario driver switched to Company A instead of Company B at age 49, he could be saving thousands of dollars by age 75, money that would be better invested in retirement savings or an investment plan.
How Does A Lapse In Car Insurance Coverage Affect Rates?
The savings would be even more dramatic if previously insured by company C, which is at the top of the group.
A similar trend is observed in Alberta. In this province, Company A (another insurance company than the Ontario example) charges the highest premiums for all drivers between the ages of 30 and 40, but becomes one of the cheapest providers after the age of 50.
You can also see that rates in both counties increase after age 70 and continue to increase until age 80 and beyond. Drivers over 70 who are involved in car accidents tend to make large claims because they need more care and time to recover. Unfortunately, this increases insurance premiums for everyone in their peer group.
That's why we say 70 years is another turning point through which motorists compare car insurance policies.

Aging works in your favor — at least with auto insurance. As you get older, your insurance company will be more beneficial to you, not worse (if you pay your bill on time and maintain a clean driving record).
We determined that the age at which you really want to make sure you start comparing is 49 years old.
Why 49 years? The age of 50 is the year many auto insurers begin assessing you as an adult driver.

And according to our data, that's the age at which the rates offered by different auto insurance companies start to diverge, leading to the biggest rate differences — meaning some drivers risk staying with an insurer that charges too much.
But as mentioned, you can find significant savings by switching auto insurance companies in your 40s. To present savings estimates in real terms, we used data from the insurance companies shown in the graphs above.
We were able to achieve different savings per province. The numbers on the right represent total savings over 26 years, while the numbers on the left represent annual savings. In both cases, we have realized various savings that can be realized by switching insurance companies.
Comparative shopping will usually get you better car insurance. But even if you don't do anything, you'll probably see the cost of your auto insurance drop every ten years.
How Car Make And Model Impact Auto Insurance
We added together the quotes we receive on our site to calculate the average dollar amount by which auto insurance rates fall each decade; this means that the average auto insurance premium will have fallen by the end of the decade.
Changes in auto insurance prices with aging were calculated by comparing the insurance costs of one age group with the insurance costs of the previous group. For example, premium changes for 40-49 year olds were determined by comparing the insurance costs of 30-39 year olds.
Our methodology does not take into account rate increases as a result of inflation and rising claims costs. This will erode some of the dollar savings we see in the real world.
In your 40s, it's important to choose an insurance company that offers a steady reduction in insurance costs as you get older. It will really pay off in your old age.
Car Insurance Rates Across Canada: Who's Paying The Most And Why?
Consumer watchdog and journalist Ellen Roseman recommends using the data in this report as a benchmark to track whether your auto insurance premiums are following an average trend.
“In general, people tend to stick with one company,” Roseman says. "If you shop too much, it can hurt you — you could be forgiven for having an accident the first time that ends when you switch to a new business — but it helps to shop around every few years."
Your bonuses should follow the same trajectory as our charts. If not and you have no accidents or speeding tickets, it may be time to switch insurance companies. To avoid overpaying, Roseman advises consumers to keep a close eye on their auto insurance payments.
“This report makes a good case for tracking your bills, not just paying them. If you pay every month, you don't pay much attention," says Roseman, comparing it to how some consumers only pay attention to the minimum payments on credit cards.
Auto Insurance 2022 Rate Increases And Predictions
Plan to log your premiums over the years, Roseman suggests. By signing up for renewal each year, you can see if your premiums have fallen to the average range by the end of the decade. Your insurance premium may increase slightly from year to year — sometimes moving to a new zip code can cause a rate change — but by the end of the decade, it should lead to an overall decline on average.
