Consumer Reports Hot Water Heater

Consumer Reports Hot Water Heater - Although the average person might not think about it when they turn on the tap, changing the way you heat water at home or in your business can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. Water heating makes up a large part of the building's energy use - up to 17% in single-family houses and 32% in multi-family houses. With buildings currently accounting for 39% of US carbon emissions, there is growing momentum for energy-efficient technologies such as heat pump water heaters (HPWHs), which are two to four times more efficient than most conventional water heating methods. HPWHs are attractive because they not only reduce energy use and carbon dioxide emissions; They can also store hot water for later use, shifting energy demand to times when the carbon dioxide impact of energy production on the electricity grid is lower. This will become even more important for utilities and grid operators as we move to a 100% renewable grid, which requires more flexible load management.

According to a 2018 RMI report, HPWHs currently make up just 2.2% of the US water heater market, and less than half of those are grid-connected. Given that all water heaters in use today will likely need to be replaced by 2035 (based on the current lifespan of conventional technologies), there is no time to lose for the market to shift towards cleaner, more energy efficient HPWHs. By doing so, US households save nearly 100 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

What began as a successful West Coast initiative, the Advanced Water Heating Initiative (AWHI) is evolving into a national effort to make high-efficiency, grid-connected HPWHs the primary choice for residential and commercial water heating across the United States. . In April 2021, collaboration between AWHI participants, NBI and our key partners (BPA, NEEA, SMUD) and critical support from the US Department of Energy (DOE) and ENERGY STAR launched AWHI as a national program. Its goal: 100% residential water heating market share by 2030 and 90% central HPWH multi-family new construction market by 2026. Achieving the AWHI moonshot goals could bring many benefits, including less pollution from fossil fuel combustion, reduced climate risks, and job-creating workforce development opportunities, along with higher wages for installers and other supply chain workers.

"With the number of wildfires and severe storms increasing every year, we cannot wait," said California Energy Commissioner Andrew McAllister. “The AWHI comes at a critical time in our challenges of climate change and economic recovery. Not only can we help decarbonize buildings with heat pump water heaters, but we can also help develop the US workforce to manufacture and install these products, creating rewarding jobs. It's good that it's being done.

AWHI wants to develop different regional efforts tailored to regional needs. The West Coast market has been catalyzed by AWHI's collaboration in California, primarily through programs and state-funded programs offered by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) and Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) continue to make progress in the Northwest helping HPWHs gain market share. In the Midwest, AWHI recently launched a new initiative in partnership with the Midwest Building Decarbonization Coalition that engages community partners to help ensure equitable access to HPWHs. AWHI is also working with NYSERDA and the Northwest Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) to explore Northeast implementation of HPWH efficiency programs, and is seeking anchor partners in the Southeast.

All AWHI working groups have now been scaled up to focus on challenges at the national level. With advice from a national steering committee of industry, government, utilities, researchers and other stakeholders, these working groups address the most significant barriers to widespread adoption of HPWHs in the residential and commercial markets, both in single and centralized systems. Priority market barriers to be addressed include reducing equipment costs, increasing product awareness and confidence, and increasing product availability and availability for purchase.

Some technological advances are critical to the widespread adoption of AWHIs. HPWHs, for example, run on 240 volts, which often requires homeowners to spend money to upgrade their electrical panel to switch from gas-fired water heaters. To solve this problem, the 120-volt Residential Task Force uses its "upgrade-ready" HPWH specification, which can be easily plugged into an existing 120-volt outlet. Four major water heater manufacturers are developing HPWHs that operate on 120-volt circuits and meet this specification. This could make HPWH a much more attractive option for a larger number of homeowners.

Hot Water Buying Guide: Size, Costs, & Types

Additionally, central HPHW manufacturers assemble a packaged HPWH system that is skid-mounted, eliminating custom engineering and field construction. This completely plug-and-play system represents the industry's transition from selling HPWHs to selling water heating systems. This approach reduces overall costs by simplifying and standardizing installations, reduces commissioning errors and significantly improves the performance of the older systems it replaced.

There has never been a more important time to work together to reduce carbon emissions in the construction sector and help mitigate the most serious climate impacts.

It will take a community of utilities, industry associations, regulators, cities, program managers, multifamily owners and homeowners to move the needle on the HPWH market. Choosing a tankless water heater can be difficult. There are hundreds of models and brands and a lot of industry jargon that can be difficult to understand. That's why we've spent hundreds of hours reviewing the best water heaters on the market.

Ecosmart Pou 4t Point Of Use Temperature Controlled Tankless Electric Water Heater 3.5 Kw 120 V Pou 4t

In previous guides we have covered things like the installation and cost of tankless water heaters and electric water heaters. We also wrote about what we consider to be the best water heater available: the Trust Hybrid Water Heater. But in this article, we assume that you have already decided to use a tankless water heater and you want to find the best one and try to answer one question: what is the best tankless water heater?

We looked at all the tankless water heaters on the market and our favorite is the Rheem Performance 27 kw (5.6 GPM). This is not only the best tankless electric water heater, but also the best choice overall.

By most measurements, Rheem Performance 27 kw and EcoSmart 27 kw are quite similar products. Both are widely regarded as the best tankless electric water heaters on the market.

In many American cities, the water contains minerals that can build up in the hot water heater and eventually corrode the tank or other components. (You can see how hard your water is by looking at this map).

All Rheem tankless water heaters are made from corrosion-resistant metal, which means they leak less from 'hard water'.

EcoSmart tankless water heaters, on the other hand, are made of copper, which means they can corrode quickly. And while they claim to have a lifetime warranty, it's important to read the fine print.

The EcoSmart warranty states: "THESE WARRANTIES DO NOT COVER: Product damage caused by scaling, sediment build-up, chemical corrosion, chlorine/chloride corrosion or freezing."

How Safe Is Our Drinking Water?

If your EcoSmart rusts, the customer service representative will tell you that you should have soaked the heating elements in vinegar every six months (which is a good inconvenience).

And that's why the Internet is full of bad reviews of EcoSmart products, like this recent Amazon review: "I wish I had never bought this product. I had to replace the heating elements twice in about 3 years, the parts cost about $250 ($85). 2 for the cell) plus labor per accident. I've put about $1000 into this unit and the failures keep coming."

Rheem tankless water heaters are not perfect. However, they consistently receive higher ratings than EcoSmart tankless water heaters. And this is mainly due to their build quality.

The Stiebel tankless water heater is priced at $620, $115 more than the Rheem and $145 more than the EcoSmart.

Instant Pot Max 6qt. Multi Cooker Review

Like the Rheem, the Stiebel Eltron Tempra is made of corrosion-resistant materials. So it is a better choice than EcoSmart.

But at a premium price of $115, we don't think it's worth it because the quality is similar to Rheem.

We do not recommend installing gas boilers (see below for why). But if you absolutely need it, we think the Rheem Performance Platinum 8.4 GPM is the best tankless natural gas water heater.

A much better choice for most homeowners is a heat pump water heater, which is considered the most energy efficient water heater available.
