A Las Vegas coin collector fetched a record $13.35 million for three rare US coins originally valued at $1.15.
A vintage silver dollar, 19th century dime and early 20th century nickel were recently sold by Bruce Morelan.
The buyer was Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections Coin Auctions in Irvine, Calif., according to a news release.
Morelan has acquired the coins for the past four years with partner Laura Sperber of Legend Numismatics in Lincroft, New Jersey. Coins have been graded by Professional Coin Grading Service.
Las Vegan Bought The Coin For More Than $10 Million
"The PCGS price guide estimates the combined value of the 'Big Three' at $10.85 million, but I was happy to pay 23 percent more, $13.35 million, for the unique opportunity to acquire the Holy Trinity at once. Each of the three coins set the price new record," said Russell.
Prior to Morelan and Russell's acquisition of the 1804 dollar, 1894 San Francisco dimes, and 1913 Liberty Head nickel, only a few other collectors were known to have examples of all three. They include the late Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss (1933-2013) and the late Baltimore financier Louis E. Eliasberg Sr. (1896-1976).
"The 1913 Liberty Head nickel is one of the most famous and sought after with only five known examples. Two are in museum collections, including one at the Smithsonian, and only three are open to the public," explained Russell.
"Like other collectibles, the rare coin market continued to build momentum last year. This transaction is further evidence of the depth and liquidity of multi-million dollar numismatic rarities," said Russell.
